Greater Kudu Fly-In Safari

Experience a truly authentic bush experience on this safari at two classic tented camps, in Laikipia and the Maasai Mara. These are some of the best places to spot wild dogs and big cats.

Greater Kudu Fly-In Safari: Summary

Greater Kudu Safari in a nutshell

If you're seeking an authentic, down-to-earth safari experience in small, owner-run camps, this is the Kenyan safari for you. Two hours north of Nanyuki, Laikipia Wilderness has a remote and adventurous feel, in large part thanks to the energetic Zimbabwean owner-managers, as game drives during your stay take place alongside walks, river swimming, mountain biking, fly camping, meals out in the bush, and more. It’s a great experience for those keen on getting out to see wildlife, in particular wild dogs and black leopards: this is the best place in Kenya to find them, and currently the only location in Africa where exceedingly rare black leopards are regularly seen. It's also excellent for families of all ages desiring a real bush experience.

In the Maasai Mara, Tangulia is another traditional tented camp with a similarly personal, low-key atmosphere. It is owned and managed by Jackson Looseyia, of the BBC’s "Big Cat Diary", which indicates what this camp is all about: the guiding and the wildlife. The Mara ecosystem has fantastic year-round game viewing, in particular of big cats, but Tangulia also has access to the famed river crossings of the great wildebeest migration around July–September. A four-night stay here offers a good opportunity to make the most of the amazing wildlife of the Mara.

Laikipia Wilderness

Days 1-4

Laikipia Wilderness opened in 2012 on the Ol Doinyo Lemboro Ranch about 2 hours drive north of Nanyuki. The camp has six spacious tents and is supported by a small team of excellent staff. It specialises in game walks as much as game drives.

Tangulia Mara

Days 4-8

Tangulia Mara opened in 2016 in a small section of privately owned land, sandwiched between the Mara North Conservancy and the Maasai Mara National Reserve. There was previously a camp here called Salt Springs Camp, dating from 2010. The emphasis here is on quality guiding and game viewing, rather than overly luxurious accommodation. Tangulia means ‘come before’ in Swahili, implying 'the leaders' or 'the avant garde'. This is an appropriate name since it is the first camp in the Mara to be owned, managed and run by the local Maasai community – in this instance by the charismatic guide and TV presenter Jackson Looseyia, of BBC series Big Cat Diary fame.
