John, the owner of Tafika Camp, was sorry to have disappointed these travellers. His call to stop cycling was made for safety reasons. There had been two big and unseasonal downpours of rain earlier in the month. This resulted in difficult to traverse roads, making cycling uncomfortable and slow. But the main issue was unusually long grass combined with a lot of elephants in the area at the time. Though John spent time scouting the surrounding trails in the lead up to their visit, he couldn’t find a safe and suitable option to offer. He apologised and explained the situation upon their arrival. John does still ride his bike between camp and his nearby house, within the camp’s boundaries, but would not ride further afield due to the potential dangers.
