About Monachira
Lapping at the foot of the low stilts that support Monachira’s tented rooms, the Monachira Channel invites exploration.
Take a boat trip along the waterway, watching elephant come to drink, or jewel-like kingfishers flitting through the papyrus reeds. Embark on a leisurely mokoro trip, almost at eye level with African jacanas using the waterlilies as stepping stones. The opportunity for water-based activities at this new camp in the heart of the Okavango Delta is exceptional.
Still on the water, try your hand at fishing, or visit the nearby heronry and marvel at the wading birds that flock here in their thousands to nest. Then back on land, consider a game drive or even a nature walk.
Then back in camp, take in the surroundings from the open-sided lounge area, or perhaps a sunlounger by the plunge pool. Chill out in the privacy of your tent, perhaps in your shaded sala or even from the comfort of your bed. Or indulge in a massage, courtesy of the on-site masseuse.
Come evening, there are drinks in the Sunset Bar or round a warming firepit before dinner – all with a view over the waterways and the plains beyond. Who knows what you'll spot from this unpretentious camp?
Our view
Located in an isolated area of Moremi National Park, Monachira is a stylish safari camp with great water activities, superb food and a very laid-back atmosphere. We love the “slow safari” ethos, where guests are encouraged to relax, unwind and embrace the unhurried rhythm of the wild. We feel that Monachira works nicely as a first or final camp within a longer Botswana safari.

View galleryMonachira: Our full report
New to the Okavango Delta for 2025, Monachira sits within Botswana's wildlife-rich Moremi Game Reserve.
Fringed by the Monachira Channel, a permanent waterway which is a key attraction for wildlife, the camp provides excellent boating safaris throughout the year. With ten smart safari tents and great guiding we foresee this becoming a highly popular destination.
A sister camp to Machaba Camp and Little Machaba in the Khwai River area, as well as Kiri Camp and Gomoti Plains Camp in the south-east of the Delta, Monachira comes with excellent credentials, and with a stunning location and stylish accommodation, we certainly feel these have been met.
Monachira’s ten en-suite tents are spread out through an area of shaded woodland, each providing plenty of space and privacy. Set five each side of the main area, these are beautifully designed. Each is surrounded by reed screens, with the interior draped in tasteful striped fabric and leather detailing, giving a modern twist to a more traditional, colonial style.
Jute rugs cover the floor, while beds are complemented by squishy pillows in tones of cream and mustard. An overhead fan provides a refreshing breeze during the day, while a “field bar” can be stocked with your favourite beverages; there is also a high-quality coffee machine here too.
At one end of the tent is a bathroom, with two beautiful vanity units carved out of solid wood and topped with rough-cut Italian marble. Freshen up using either the indoor or outdoor shower, complete with complimentary toiletries from Healing Earth.
Outside each tent a canvas-shaded veranda provides further comfortable seating and views over the floodplains beyond. And, if you're feeling truly indulgent, you can arrange for an in-room facial or massage by the on-site therapist.
In a slightly more private location to the west of the site, the honeymoon tent is the same as the standard tents, but with the bonus of an outside bath as well as the outside shower.
Two family tents, closest to the central area. These consist of two separate standard tents, each with its own bathroom, and connected by a short corridor. These can comfortably accommodate up to four people.
At the heart of the camp is a lounge and separate dining area, along with a guest toilet and a small curio shop. As with the tents, these are stylishly designed, with the same signature striped fabric taking centre stage on the walls. Cosy sofas are laden with an excessive number of cushions; decorative rattan baskets give character; and several coffee tables are adorned with natural history books. To one side is a self-service bar, where guests are welcome to help themselves, although there is usually a member of staff on hand to assist.
Overlooking the seasonal floodplains is a firepit, or “bush TV”, where guests may gather in the mornings for an early breakfast, or possibly to enjoy an evening drink while watching the sunset. Wildlife is frequently seen here, and on our last visit we were treated to a herd of four elephants passing through the camp during lunch.
Come warm days there are two twin plunge pools to cool off, perhaps after an alfresco lunch. A reed screen separates a changing area, while an ever-present coolbox is stocked with refreshing drinks.
Monachira’s location on the main Monachira Channel means that it is ideally located for excellent water-based activities. The camp has three boats at present, each with eight comfy swivel seats and an upstairs viewing deck. When staying here in 2025 we loved the boating safaris to the Gcodikwe Heronry; this is at its best between August and December where herons, egrets and storks flock here in their thousands to nest, although it can still offer great birding throughout the year. On a separate morning we encountered elephants playing in the river, spending a memorable half hour with them while they bathed and feasted on waterlilies.
In addition to motorboats (and dependent on water levels), Monachira also offers mokoro trips during the flood months of June to October, gliding over shallow waters while watching insect and birdlife. They also hope to be able to offer fishing trips in the future.
While boating is the stand-out activity here, Monachira also offers a number of land-based activities. The camp’s secluded location, cut off from the rest of Moremi National Park by the Monachira Channel, means that you will see few other vehicles on game drives. Wildlife sightings here can be very good, with – subject to water levels – healthy populations of both predators and plains game to be found; between June and September the high flood may put a halt to this activity. In the near future, there are plans to offer walking safaris, accompanied by an armed guide, while Monachira also hopes to carry out night drives here too.

- Food quality
- Meals at Monachira were the highlight of our stay, and a reason to come here in its own right. We were thoroughly impressed with the food, finding it incredibly fresh and tasty, with well thought-through dishes, and beautifully presentation. We also appreciated the portion sizes, which unlike many safari camps left us feeling comfortably satiated rather than bursting at the seams.
You can choose to start the day early, with a light breakfast served around the campfire at 6.00am. Or, if you have a leisurely morning on the boats, you may prefer a later breakfast in camp at around 8.00am. This typically consists of a continental buffet with a selection of cold meats, breads and pastries, jams and spreads, yoghurts and cereals. Eggs and hot items are available to order.
Lunch timings are flexible, but typically between midday and 2.00pm. Both lunch and dinner are à la carte, with a choice of menu options that changes daily. On one occasion we started lunch with homemade focaccia and pesto dip, followed by grilled chicken accompanied by a trio of salads, and rounded off with peach and ginger sorbet. On another day, options included creamy mushroom pappardelle with sautéed mushrooms and a garlic parmesan sauce, or alternatively gnocchi with smoked trout, both accompanied by a selection of salads. This was followed by vanilla ice-cream.
After a leisurely siesta, afternoon tea will be served, usually including both savoury and sweet options.
Dinner is usually served around 7.30– 8.00pm, and provides a choice of two starters, three main courses and two desserts. Starters can include options such roast tomato soup with crispy fried capers and a dollop of herbed yoghurt, or beetroot and goat’s cheese tart with flaky pastry and caramelised onions. Mains typically include one red-meat option, a white-meat option, and a vegetarian option. We loved the lemon-herb roast chicken with roast fennel, new potatoes and gremolata, while the alternatives were a rump steak with blue-cheese salad, curried cauliflower, sesame and aubergine purée, and turmeric baby corn crumble with a balsamic reduction. Dessert was either a honey masala crème brulée, or a passion-fruit tart with marula ice cream. - Dining style
