Suricate Kalahari Tented Camp: Our full report

Suricate Kalahari Tented Camp is located in the 100km² Intu Afrika Kalahari Game Reserve in the Namibian Kalahari.

Despite its proximity to the road, it has its own waterhole, which is a real plus for the camp, and feels relatively in touch with the wilderness environment.

Suricate has a more rustic bushcamp feel than the other properties on the reserve, Zebra Kalahari Lodge and Camelthorn Kalahari Lodge, Although we have never stayed here, we have visited several times over the years, most recently in May 2018.

Unlike its sister properties, Suricate Kalahari Tented Camp has, as the name suggests, 12 tented rooms, including a larger honeymoon suite, which also has its own private pool. All are accessed from a big wooden deck with a table and chairs that face the plains and the small waterhole. Double or twin beds with mosquito nets benefit from the view, too, and you’ll also find tea and coffee facilities, a minibar, fan and hairdryer – along with fluffy white towels in the en-suite bathroom.

The main area at Suricate features a long communal dining table with a bar at one end and a small lounge with a fireplace at the other. Walking through, you emerge onto an expansive deck with more tables and chairs where dinner can be enjoyed on warmer evenings. There's a firepit here, too, where guests gather for pre- or after-dinner drinks, and in front are a beautiful infinity pool and a boma filled with loungers and chairs.

Activities from Suricate Kalahari Tented Camp are similar to those at its sister properties: afternoon game drives in search of the desert-adapted species that call the reserve home (but don’t come expecting to see the big five), and sundowner drives or walks to a dune for a cool drink. Guests may also opt to participate in quadbiking or have a treatment or massage at Zebra Kalahari Lodge. (NB: It's essential that you read the Quadbike warning in the 'Health & Safety' section below for our comments on insurance issues regarding this activity.)

Our view

Suricate Kalahari Tented Camp is our favourite property on the reserve, with more character as well as its own waterhole, and it offers some interesting activities. As a result, guests may wish to linger more than the usual one-night stop off.
