Okonjima Plains Camp review

Having visited Okonjima/Africat at the outset, and also several times during it's early years, it was quite a shock to find that it had increased to such a vast size and lost it's original character. It was a far cry from 'tea on the lawn' and dinner around a fire pit.

However, the staff were extremely friendly and helpful, the standard rooms very spacious and comfortable, and excellent food. With just a 2 night stay and an early start the day we left, there was not enough time to do all the activities, although I think that coming from the abundant wildlife in Etosha then it was not necessary for us to do the game drives, The leopard tracking and the night drive were worth doing. And after doubting that we would want to continue to support Africat after all these years the visit to the Africat Foundation convinced us that it was still a very worthwhile cause.

Brilliant safari experience

This lodge is very very good - superbly located in the middle of its own reserve. The main dining area is vast and architecturally impressive.

The food was terrific, the overall service excellent, and the activities very exciting. We enjoyed our afternoon radio tracking a leopard. The accommodation is just unbelievable - we had panoramic windows out onto the plains, with jackals and springbok pottering past our veranda, and warthogs attempting to steal our breakfast.

Okonjima Plains Camp

We were lucky to be upgraded from a Standard Room to a View Room which was very large and impressive, excellent en suite as well.
The meals were excellent; we had one dinner on the outside deck and one in the dining room. Our final meal was a superb packed breakfast which we picked up at 6am as we headed for Windhoek airport.
It must be disappointing for the Africat folks to have to put their cheetah program on hold.

Leopards spotted!

Great room overlooking the plain.

Enjoyed both the drives we did although sponsorship for was rammed down your throats a bit too much but can put up with that to then see the cheetahs.

The morning leopard tracking drive was fantastic in that we saw both a male and female leopard.

Okonjima Plains Camp review

We had a comfortable stay, the rooms were very good, and the staff was friendly and helpful.

We did the Leopard tracking, and enjoyed it as a sundowner tour. The tracking itself was interesting, and we managed to find a leopard. As photographers it was just ok. The tracking collar took away from the photos, but we did enjoy the drive, and a beautiful sunset.

Interesting place. Seen tagged leopard in tree.

However, excursion to cheeta's in enclosure was interesting but not the real thing mostly a reason for a contribution to Afri Cat which we would have been happy to give anyway. .

Story of cheetahs very sad ie cant be released into the park as the leopards kill them all as rivals for prey.

Okonjima Plains Camp review

Bigger than some of the other places we stayed and somewhat less welcoming, although the staff were all very friendly. Felix, our guide took us on a really good drive in the morning tracking a leopard which we finally found. The afternoon drive to see the work of the Africat Foundation was interesting but less exciting in that the cheetahs there are now in captivity and provided with food rather than in the wild.

Our standard room was very good with a nice view across the bush and very well equipped. We don’t see the benefit of a View room.

We went on one of the three walks which was well signposted and a good opportunity to see some animals on foot rather than from a vehicle.

Wow. Wow. Wow.

This camp is Luxury from start to finish. I am pleased we stayed here on our last 2 nights, or it would have been all downhill from here on.

The rooms are fantastic, with a panoramic view while you are laid in bed of the wildlife area. Ours was a standard room, so I have no idea what the people got extra for their extra money. The bathroom is huge and you are provided with everything that you need. The food was excellent, Well Presented by friendly and attentive waiters.

This is well worth the 25 km from the main road to get here.

We went on 2 organised game drives, one that included a sundowner and one the following day, when we saw the Leopard.

Quite an experience at Okonjima Plains Camp

Africat Foundation's Okonjima Plains Camp is a remarkable place. Our individual "standard" camp chalets were extremely large and very deluxe, with a huge well equipped bathroom. The chalet overlooks the concession area where we saw the occasional animal. A large open lounge and dining area in the main lodge is artistically designed and has an adjoining well stocked gift shop.
The main attractions at Okonjima are the cheetah and leopards, which we hoped to see on our afternoon and morning drives. Our South African guide Jordi was passionate about the work done by Africat and he proved to be an amazing guide, expressing a personal relationship he had with the animals. He did, in fact, lead us to one of the leopards within an hour of starting to track it.
He provided us with clear and concise information about the work done by the foundation and the relationship it has with the country's farming community.
The meals were of very high standard and dining room service was excellent

Okonjima Plains Camp review

Upgraded happily to view rooms, which were very large and exquisitely comfortable, with magnificently large windows.

Much wildlife, and opportunities for self-guided walks and guided tours. Conservation focus was great to see.
