Buzzard Fly-in Safari: Summary
Buzzard Fly-in in a nutshell
After a first relaxing night in the capital, take a scenic light-aircraft flight some 400km northwest to Damaraland and the vast Palmwag Concession. Larger than the county of Somerset, this rocky landscape of flat-topped mountains, intermittent rivers, springs and arid grassland is home to the largest free-roaming population of black rhino in Africa and your lodging for the next two nights, Desert Rhino Camp.
Remote but comfortable, Desert Rhino Camp specialises in tracking its namesake on foot, a real privilege, but other species, such as desert-adapted elephant, Hartmann's mountain zebra, giraffe, oryx, springbok and kudu, abound. Predators, like hyena, lion and leopard are also often spotted.
Next spend four nights split between two luxury lodges in private reserves bordering Etosha National Park. In Ongava, you can track white rhinos on foot and learn about the important conservation work here, while Onguma offers some wonderful walks. Both have great hides where you can sit and let wildlife come to you, and night drives to spot nocturnal species. You’ll also spend a whole day in Etosha itself on a private game drive between the reserves to see its great gatherings of wildlife around precious waterholes at the edge of the shimmering pans.
One last flight south takes you to perhaps the most chic lodge in Namibia – Omaanda. On its own reserve a little way outside of Windhoek, it is home to lion, wild dog, white rhino and plains game, which mingles among the stylish thatched "huts". Spend sunrise with a troop of meerkat, track elephants and leopards, then visit the nearby Shiloh Wildlife Sanctuary. Or simply relax by the pool after time in the spa and enjoy the incredible cuisine here.
