Buzzard Fly-in Safari

A luxury flying safari of Damaraland and Etosha National Park in northern Namibia with a focus on wildlife, conservation and a collection of fabulous lodges.

Buzzard Fly-in Safari: Summary

Buzzard Fly-in in a nutshell

After a first relaxing night in the capital, take a scenic light aircraft flight some 400km northwest to Damaraland and the vast Palmwag Concession. Larger than the county of Somerset, this rocky landscape of flat-topped mountains, intermittent rivers, springs and arid grassland is home to the largest free roaming population of black rhino in Africa and you lodging for the next two nights, Desert Rhino Camp.

Remote but comfortable, the speciality here is tracking its namesake on foot, a real privilege, but other species such as desert-adapted elephant, Hartmann's mountain zebra, giraffe, oryx, springbok and kudu. Predators, like hyena, lion and leopard are also often spotted.

Next spend four nights split between two luxury lodges in private reserves bordering Etosha National Park. In Ongava, you can track white rhinos on foot and learn about the important conservation work here, while Onguma offers some wonderful walks. Both have great hides where you can sit and let wildlife come to you and night drives to spot nocturnal species. You’ll also spend a whole day in Etosha itself on a private game drive between the reserves to see its great gatherings of wildlife around precious waterholes at the edge of the shimmering pans.

One last flight south takes you to perhaps the chicest lodge in Namibia – Omaanda. In its own reserve a little way outside of Windhoek, its home to lion, wild dog, white rhino and plains game which mingles among the stylish thatched ‘huts’. Spend sunrise with a troop of meerkat, track elephants and leopards, then visit the nearby Shiloh Wildlife Sanctuary. Or simply relax by the pool after time in the spa and enjoy the incredible cuisine here.

Desert Rhino Camp

Days 2-4

Remote, exclusive and specialised, Desert Rhino Camp is located in the vast Palmwag Concession, a semi-desert reserve of about 5,000km2 between Etosha National Park and the Skeleton Coast that is one of the best places to see desert-dwelling black rhino and elephants. The camp has been operating for more than 20 years and its activities – run by a reliably superb and committed team – centre on tracking black rhino.

Ongava Lodge

Days 4-6

Perched on the top of a small kopje (rocky outcrop), with stunning views of the plains below, Ongava Lodge was the original 'luxury game lodge' near Etosha. It stands on the private Ongava Game Reserve, which borders the southern side of Etosha National Park near the Andersson Gate, south of Okaukuejo.

Onguma The Fort

Days 6-8

Located on the 340km2 Onguma Reserve, Onguma The Fort (previously known as Onguma Plains Camp) is very close to the eastern entrance gate of Namibia’s Etosha National Park. With a strong Moroccan theme and a striking water feature, it is an elegant and stylish base from which to explore the park.

Omaanda

Days 8-10

Opened in 2018, Omaanda is a luxury lodge on a private nature reserve north-east of Namibia's capital, Windhoek. It's the fourth property of the Zannier Hotels Group – a small, smart group with strong celebrity links, whose other boutique hotels are in France, Belgium and Cambodia.
