The Highlights of Africa

An epic adventure taking in some of Africa’s most incredible sights and wildlife experiences, from Cape Town to the Okavango Delta, Victoria Falls, the Maasai Mara and an encounter with mountain gorillas.

The Highlights of Africa: Summary

The Highlights of Africa in a nutshell

This is an incredible once-in-a-lifetime adventure taking in some of our favourite spots in Africa – a great mix of epic scenery and some of the very best safari experiences on the continent.

Begin in South Africa in beautiful Cape Town. With four nights at the charming Mount Nelson, you’ll have plenty of time to discover the culture and history of the city, its celebrated dining scene and scenic hiking trails, as well as getting to venture further afield to spot whales, meet penguins on the beach or for a little indulgence in the Winelands.

Then fly north to Botswana and the pristine waterways of the Okavango Delta for three nights of safari from Kwara Camp. Look forward to some exceptional game viewing alongside expert tracker-guide teams on the lookout for the wildlife which thrives here on a great mix of drives, walks and water-based activities that really show off why the Delta is among the premier safari spots in the world.

Take a short hop north into Zimbabwe and the historic Victoria Falls Hotel with its enviable position by the thundering wall of water. It’s a great base for both the adventure activities the Falls are renowned for and more serene excursions, like sunset river cruises on the Zambezi.

Your next destination is Kenya and, after the stop in Nairobi, you’ll be taken to the iconic savannah of the Maasai Mara and for a stay at the classic Little Governor’s Camp. If timed to coincide with the migration, you’ll find yourself amid Africa’s grandest wildlife spectacle as millions of wildebeest and zebra blanket the plains, but even as they depart the safari is excellent.

Finally fly to neighbouring Rwanda and the green slopes of Volcanoes National Park which are home to troops of mountain gorillas. Led by trackers, trek through the forest for an intimate encounter with a habituated family group of these gentle yet oddly familiar giants – a humbling and unforgettable experience unlike anything else.

Mount Nelson Hotel

Days 1-5

The Mount Nelson Hotel – or 'Nellie', as locals call it – is a real institution. It is Cape Town's oldest and most famous hotel; a place to be seen. Set in the heart of Cape Town's cultural centre, it is close to the lively Victoria & Alfred Waterfront and some of the city's stunning beaches.

Kwara Camp

Days 5-8

In the heart of the Okavango Delta, Kwara Camp sits on a forested island within the private, game-rich Kwara Reserve. From this vantage point, overlooking floodplains and a seasonal lagoon, it offers year-round land and water activities. Following a complete rebuild in September 2019, the camp is now far more upmarket in style than previously, with no under 18s allowed.

Victoria Falls Hotel

Days 8-10

Oozing Edwardian style, the Victoria Falls Hotel is the most famous address in town. For travel afficionados, it's a name to rival Raffles in Singapore or The Ritz in London. When it was opened in 1904, to house engineers constructing Cecil Rhodes’ railway, the elegant hotel clearly had first choice of locations: next to the vital railway station with a vantage point above the bridge which spans the gorge. Its location is still unsurpassed: the closest Zimbabwean hotel to the waterfall and within a short walk of town .

Ole-Sereni

Day 10

Opened in 2009, the Ole-Sereni is a convenient hotel for Nairobi’s airports. The building, which formerly housed the US Embassy, borders the north side of Nairobi National Park, and has a first-floor terrace giving direct views across the savannah.

Little Governors' Camp

Days 11-14

On the lip of an old oxbow of the Mara River, now a broad marsh frequented by elephants, Little Governors' Camp is one of only a handful of places to stay in the Mara Triangle sector of the Maasai Mara National Reserve. It has won a place in the hearts of many safari-goers and has been a favourite with visitors to the Maasai Mara since the 1970s.
