Shoebill Island Camp
Please Note: Full management of the Bangweulu Wetlands has recently been taken over by the NGO African Parks, including management of Shoebill Island Camp. They have closed the property to undertake considerable renovations; we have been told the camp will be more of a safari-lodge style camp upon its reopening, which they are hoping will be in July 2017. The nearby airstrip is being raised so they camp will also be able to accommodate guests during the rainy season. Given the success of African Parks in other areas in Africa, we expect that their involvement will lead to a serious rejuvenation of the area, and a great new version of Shoebill Island.
Our view of Shoebill Island Camp
Shoebill Island Camp is a very simple bushcamp and is not luxurious by any means, however it is the perfect spot for travelers who have done other safaris before and want a completely different, offbeat experience. It is great for serious bird enthusiasts as well as those who wish to see the rare black lechwe and other plains game found in this area. It is usually best visited in combination with the camps in the nearby Kasanka National Park, Wasa Lodge and Luwombwa Lodge.
