Congo weather and climateTravellers to the Congo often wonder when to go for the best possible weather during their trip. Indeed, the weather conditions can contribute significantly to making your holidays enjoyable. However, as easy as the question "When is the best time to go to the Congo?" sounds, as complex is the answer. Your best time to visit Congo will depend on you, as one person's best time can be another's worst! Hence, instead of trying to give a one-fits-all answer, here we’ll try to help you make an informed choice.
When looking at our broad guide to the climate of the Congo, bear in mind nobody can guarantee that the weather during your trip will be exactly like that, as weather patterns across Africa are becoming more and more unpredictable. Probably due to global warming, we see downpours in the middle of deserts and damaging droughts when rains should be falling.
In the case of Congo, we’ve used the best sources that we can… and still they seem to conflict a little.
- Below is a written description of what we are told is the typical weather in the Congo.
- On the right, and on the Climate Statistics tab above, are charts with actual climate statistics from a recent year.
This uncertainty makes it especially difficult to define the best time to travel to the Congo. That said, here is what we understand about it…
Typical climate in the CongoThe climate across the Congo is basically the same wherever you go, hot and humid, with only slight differences between the northern and southern regions of the country. From October to May the south of the Congo gets a bit less rain than the north, and it tends to have a shorter dry period in the middle of the year. Generally, there are four seasons, which are alternating dry and rainy:
- a short dry season from January to February
- a short rainy season from March to April
- a long dry season from May to September
- a long rainy season from October to December
Thus we regard the best time to visit the Congo as when it’s most likely to be dry: June, July or August, or possibly January or February.
