Klipspringer Safari

An outstanding-value Zimbabwe safari exploring Victoria Falls and two contrasting locations in western Zimbabwe – Hwange and the Matobo Hills – giving you a real feel for Zimbabwe, its people and wildlife.

Klipspringer Safari: Summary

Klipspringer Safari in a nutshell

Begin your Zimbabwean adventure based close to the thundering waters of Victoria Falls. From your charming lodge in a leafy suburb of town, you can walk to the spectacular UNESCO World Heritage Site to feel the full force up-close. It’s also a hub for adrenalin-fuelled activities such as white-water rafting, bungee jumping off the famous railway bridge and taking a microlight over the "the smoke that thunders", as well as more serene options like a sunset cruise on the upper Zambezi or afternoon tea at a historic hotel.

You’ll then be driven south-east in a private vehicle to Ivory Lodge, a comfortable spot within the private Sikumi Forest Reserve which borders Hwange National Park and overlooks a waterhole where elephants often visit to drink. Enjoy 4WD drives into the national park where you can spot some of its 100 mammal species, including lion, leopard and giraffe, along with night drives and walking safaris in the reserve, all with qualified professional guides. The team at Ivory Lodge have established strong community links and you can learn about their outreach work and local life on visits to a neighbouring village. You can also relax in a secluded hide and let the wildlife come to you.

Continuing by road, your final stop is one of Zimbabwe’s most scenic protected areas – the Matobo Hills. It’s a rugged place of granite outcrops and boulders seemingly stacked atop each other by giants, among which Amalinda Lodge’s unique rooms are nestled. The lodge itself is a marvel with a spectacular pool and excellent guides who’ll show you the area’s history – from ancient cave paintings to the medieval ruins of Great Zimbabwe and Cecil Rhodes' burial site – local culture and, a real highlight, walking with white rhinos alongside park rangers.

Batonka Guest Lodge

Days 1-3

Tucked away in a quiet, leafy suburb of Victoria Falls Town, Batonka is just over 2km from the eponymous waterfall. Although its location isn’t quite as convenient for the Falls and town as many other options in the area, it’s only a 20-minute drive from the airport, and its relatively small size and quiet situation do make for a more peaceful and relaxing stay.

Ivory Lodge

Days 3-6

The relatively small Ivory Lodge is situated in the Sikumi Forest Reserve, a strip of protected land in Zimbabwe sandwiched between the main Victoria Falls–Bulawayo road and Hwange National Park. One of the easiest of Hwange's safari lodges to access by road, Ivory stands next to a large waterhole that, in season, attracts elephants in their hundreds. Although this is a significant draw, the lodge focuses most of its activities on 4WD game drives into the nearby Hwange National Park.

Amalinda Lodge

Days 6-9

In a small private concession within Matobo Hills, Amalinda Lodge occupies a truly spectacular location. The lodge, formerly Camp Amalinda, is comfortable and owner run, with authentic, cleverly designed rooms built amongst ancient granite boulders. Come for the setting, the rich history and the opportunity to track rhino on foot.
