Room types at Ras Kutani
Beachside Cottages
Our nine beach cottages are scattered on either side of the main building, all with ocean views and gentle breezes. Under the thatch, a spacious veranda unfurls with comfortable kikoi seating and lazy-making hammocks. The hard wood shutters lead through to the beautifully decorated interiors; the majestic double bed and fan surrounded by a billowing mosquito net and on to the generous ensuite bathroom.
Hill House
The perfect way to end a family holiday is a stay at our family house. As the name suggests, it too is situated above the main camp with blissful sea views. The house comprises of two spacious ensuite rooms, linked by an expansive terrace with built in seating; an ideal space to swap holiday stories and enjoy each other’s company.
Hillside Suites
Perched on the hillside and offering definitive privacy, are four secluded suites. Steps from the main building take guests deeper into the coastal forest, to their own secluded hideaway, where the only company you have are the chattering monkeys. The cascading panoramic view down to the ocean is the quintessential tropical backdrop to the private plunge pool and array of outside seating. The interiors are lusciously spacious, as you wake lie back in the vast Sultan double bed and let your eyes drift across the fluttering white curtains towards the azure seas below.
Activities at Ras Kutani
Beach activities
Kayaks and boogie boards are available for guests seeking more physical exercise. Our calm fresh water lagoon is the perfect place to paddle and delve further into the riverine forest while families can have fun in the surf with the boards or even try their hand at beach volleyball or boules / petanque.
Forest Walks
Perfect for a morning amble, guests can discover the coastal forest behind the camp, which boasts over 132 different species of trees, a colourful array of gossamer-winged butterflies and delight in the antics of three species of monkey, including the spectacular black-and-white colobus.
Relaxation
To completely unwind, either laze on the sunloungers by the cool waters of the swimming pool or let our beach attendants erect a beautiful sunshade on the beach, specially located for your privacy and that all important afternoon nap. Unlike other Tanzanian resorts our beaches are deserted and perfect for long, meandering walks in the cool of the day.
From the comfort of your terrace hammock let your eyes sweep across the ocean because between the months of July to October guests may have the chance to witness the awe inspiring humpback whales which migrate past Ras Kutani.
Snorkel
Use our complimentary snorkelling equipment to explore the shipwreck of The Chyko, a cargo vessel built in the 1900s, which lies just off shore. Although our coast is not a marine park, the waters do offer a snapshot of the beautiful Indian Ocean, with strikingly coloured fish and intricate corals.
Spa
For complete luxury let our onsite beauty therapist massage your cares away or treat yourself to a manicure.
Turtle Hatching
Seasonally each year green turtles return to the sheltered beaches of Ras Kutani to nest, which offers guests the opportunity to behold in wonder as baby turtles hatch and make their first journey towards the ocean. This activity is organised in conjunction with Sea Sense, a Non Government Organisation (NGO) that works closely with coastal communities in Tanzania to conserve and protect endangered marine species. This humbling and charming experience is not to be missed.
Village Walk
Visit Kichangani, our local village, for an insight into Tanzanian life - visit the local school and clinic as well as have a cultural exchange with the villagers. Selous Safari Company support the local community with textbooks, desks, hostel facilities and our fantastic Selous Safari Kids Initiatives for more information visit our website. Our walks are guided by a member of our staff who live in the village.
