Pygmy Mouse Self-drive Safari

A truly epic southern African self-drive safari adventure from Namibia’s mountains and deserts, along the lush Caprivi Strip to Botswana and Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, staying at luxury lodges throughout.

Pygmy Mouse Self-drive Safari: Summary

Pygmy Mouse Self-drive in a nutshell

This is a great trip for those after a real self-drive adventure, crossing ever-changing landscapes in three countries between luxury camps and some excellent safari.

Pick up your car on arrival into Windhoek for a relaxing first night in Namibia’s diminutive capital. The first proper drive north brings you to Okonjima Nature Reserve, a conservation-focused place that’s home to the AfriCat Foundation. Learn about their conservation work as you track leopards and perhaps see some of the rarer species studied here such as pangolin and brown hyena.

Turning west, asphalt turns to gravel as you head into Damaraland for a stay at Doro Nawas, a community-owned lodge with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and dry savannah. Take drives to follow herds of desert-adapted elephants as they amble across the rugged landscape and visit the 6000-year-old rock engravings at Twyfelfontein, a fascinating UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Next is the great lunar landscape of Etosha National Park, a great salt pan left by an ancient lake that hosts some truly spectacular wildlife sightings as animals gather around precious water-sources. You’ll stay first at a rest camp within the park whose relative simplicity is more than made up for by its waterhole which draws giraffe, elephant, oryx, zebra, wildebeest, ostrich, lion and crashes of black rhino. Driving through the park at your own pace, spend another two nights at the luxurious Mushara Outpost. Relax and explore the park some more in your own vehicle or on a guided game drive.

Then head northeast with a stop by the Kavango right on the Angolan border before entering the Caprivi, an odd protrusion of Namibia that is a remnant of colonial treaties. It is a contrastingly lush place defined by rivers and you’ll follow the Kavango into Botswana to the top of the Delta’s panhandle and Nxamaseri Lodge. It’s great spot for birding, fishing and boat trips to see crocodiles and hippos. The exceptional rock art of Tsodilo Hills, Botswana’s first World Heritage Site, are also nearby.

Back in Namibia, explore the rich wetlands of Nkasa Rupara National Park from a remote eco-camp on day and night game drives and boating along the Kwando-Linyanti River. Cross once again into Botswana and the iconic Chobe National Park to the friendly lodge on a quieter stretch of the riverfront which is an ideal base for waterborne safaris to see the great elephant herds Chobe is famous for, as well as night drives and walks in the Forest Reserve. Antelope species are prolific and predator sightings not uncommon.

End your trip in Zimbabwe by the breath-taking Victoria Falls. Chill out with sunset cruises and afternoon tea at a historic venue, or keep the adventure going with exciting excursions on offer here such as white water rafting and microlight flights.

Okonjima Plains Camp

Days 2-4

Okonjima Plains Camp is the most affordable place to stay within the 220km² private Okonjima Nature Reserve. Designed to reflect its cattle-farming origins, it opened in 2014, replacing the first lodge on the farm, Okonjima Main Camp, which had been converted from the original Hanssen family farmhouse. Predators, most notably leopard, roam across 220km² of plains and rolling hills, their presence underpinned by the work of the AfriCat Foundation, which was set up to conserve and protect Namibia's wildlife, focusing primarily on carnivores.

View full itinerary

Doro Nawas

Days 4-6

Doro Nawas Camp is perched on top of a rugged, rocky hill, on the floodplains of Namibia’s dry Aba Huab River. Solid, castle-like and almost foreboding in appearance, it has open and attractive views across the plains to the mountains and sandstone cliffs of Twyfelfontein.

Okaukuejo Camp

Days 6-8

Set in the heart of Etosha National Park, Okaukuejo Resort is a classic restcamp, with a range of accommodation. With over 100 rooms and a large campsite, it is one of the largest properties we feature. Yet accommodation is not what Okaukuejo is about; travellers stay here for one thing – the wildlife, and particularly the wildlife that visits the superb floodlit waterhole.

Mushara Outpost

Days 8-10

Just 10km from Etosha National Park's eastern gate, Mushara Outpost sits within the private Mushara Reserve. With only eight tented rooms, it aims to provide an intimate and luxurious base from which to explore Namibia's foremost wildlife park.

Hakusembe River Lodge

Day 10

Situated on the banks of the Kavango River, Hakusembe River Lodge is a substantial but established lodge, which has been extended in recent years. It's a peaceful spot, about 12km west of the town of Rundu at the gateway to Namibia’s Caprivi Strip (or Zambezi Region). The lodge is set in lovely well-kept gardens, with roses and other colourful flowers planted in lawns that lead down to the river. Ample shade is provided during the heat of the day by acacia trees, beloved of the resident bird population.

Nxamaseri Lodge

Days 11-13

One of the oldest lodges in the Okavango, Nxamaseri Island Lodge stands on an island in the Okavango Panhandle, north of the Delta – about 37km south of Shakawe. Nestled among the deep permanent channels of the Panhandle, Nxamaseri offers a prime deep-water Okavango experience. Cruise the waterways in search of birdlife among the papyrus, glide silently across the water in a mokoro, visit the Tsodilo Hills or enjoy a spot of fishing – fly-fishing for the prized tiger fish was pioneered here.

Jackalberry Tented Camp

Days 13-15

Jackalberry Tented Camp lies in the far north of Namibia, on its own exclusive concession deep within Nkasa Rupara National Park (formerly Mamili National Park). It was initially opened in 2015 as a self-catering camp for those looking to enjoy unrivalled access to the park. Then in February 2016 the owners decided to change tack and it is now an intimate, fully catered and hosted eco-camp.

Muchenje Safari Lodge

Days 15-17

From high on the escarpment, Muchenje Safari Lodge overlooks a seasonal floodplain of the Chobe River. From this peaceful spot within Chobe Forest Reserve, with Namibia's Zambezi Region (formerly the Caprivi Strip) in the distance and about 60km west of the bustling town of Kasane, this traditional lodge has the advantage of operating game drives in a relatively quiet area of the Chobe Riverfront.

Ilala Lodge

Days 17-19

Just ten minutes' walk from the Zimbabwe side of the Victoria Falls, Ilala is very well placed. It's even closer to the centre of Victoria Falls town, too, offering good-quality, affordable accommodation furnished in a comfortable colonial style.
