"Wild Dogs in Savuti"

3 nights Arrived 10 Sep 2011
"We had a delightful stay at Savuti and it set the standard for the rest of our trip. The staff were extremely knowledgeable and helpful. Our guide, Lazi, was first rate and because we had hired a private vehicle we were able to do what we had intended. The highlight was undoubtedly seeing the pack of 19 wild dogs close up. The boat trip on the channel proved to be a wonderful way of viewing the elephants and provided some excellent photo opportunities. All in all we saw the animals we had expected. The dogs were a real bonus.

The management were very helpful indeed and eager to ensure we got the most out of our holiday. I must thank Grant Atkinson for all his tips on photography even though he was not our guide." See all these reviews: 12n in Botswana

"Great accommodation and best game viewing"

3 nights Arrived 26 May 2010
"Excellent accommodation, service and hospitality. Initially we and our car mates were unhappy with our guide who appeared uncommunicative and opinionated. After a word with Warren, the manager, the situation improved significantly.

This guide is highly regarded by management and by previous guests judging by comments in the visitors book, so we obviously struck him on an off day.

Game viewing was excellent, and included wild dog, cheetah, leopard and a small herd of sable" See all these reviews: 13n in Botswana

"An amazing transformation"

3 nights Arrived 19 Aug 2009
"It was wonderful to see Savuti transformed by the water in the channel. It is now such a pretty area and it was so interesting to see how quickly waterbased flora and fauna have moved into the area. It was so strange to sit on our deck watching hippos, herons and fish eagles instead of herds of plains animals.

There are still vast numbers of elephant in the area with lots of young. A new phenomenon is the large number of hippos now basking in the river. Some of the best hippo viewing we have ever had.

However, compared with our previous visit we felt that the game viewing was not as good. Whether this was just bad luck for the days we were there, a one-off result of the game being more dispersed as the result of the number of waterholes resulting from good, and late, rains or a longer term effect of the flowing channel. it is difficult to say. Also it is possible that herds of other types of animal will increase over time as a result of the flowing channel (e.g. lechwe, roan antelope, reed and water buck, buffalo etc.).

Dinner in the bush was quite a highlight, something we have never done before in 5 visits to Botswana." See all these reviews: 7n in Botswana; 5n in Namibia; 2n in South Africa

"Savuti Channel is back!"

2 nights Arrived 10 Jul 2009
"This was our first thatched camp, which made the lodgings all the more romantic. And, for the first time in nearly 30 years, the Savuti Channel is now flowing, bringing new flora and fauna to this dry-land camp.

Our guide, Goodman, grew up in Kasane, the closest town, and brought extensive local knowledge of the area. In addition, his superior understanding of animal behaviour added a new dimension to our safari experience. This was demonstrated in particular when we became surrounded by a herd of thirsty elephants, and when we tracked a male and female leopard enjoying the fruits of a kill.

Also, Goodman has a great sense of humour - but, if he builds in steak tartare and the faint hope clause into his repertoire, Canada is to be thanked.

Welcoming staff, and good ambience in the camp." See all these reviews: 13n in Botswana

"A walk on the wild side"

2 nights Arrived 7 Mar 2009
"Another awe-inspiring flight from Little Vumbura to this camp. Beware the thermals can make for a bumpy ride and I lost my lunch! Next time I'd take a travel pill. Diana kindly took me straight to my room and provided pills and fresh ginger to settle my stomach. She was a thoughtful and very professional hostess.

The beautiful room looked right out onto the channel and had elephant crashing by at night and wading out midstream in the moonlight - not captured on film but indelibly printed in the memory bank!

Another friendly and highly professional team made our last few days in Botswana a real pleasure. Each drive was a treat : Ant took as much delight in showing us the 'small things' as he did in pointing out the big game and gentle Goodman showed a heartwarming love and respect for the animals.

As with each camp, we noticed the general lack of interest in birds, although Goodman and Ant were quick to stop for us when we asked, but they did have to consider the interests of the others in the vehicle. Perhaps it could be possble to ask each new arrival what their wishes are and match up teams in the vehicles a little better?

Our last morning was the best bit because Ant kindly took the two of us out for a birding walk. it was good to feel the ground beneath our feet and experience Botswana from a lion's eye perspective: he is great company and although the lions were roaring in the distance we had every faith in his considerable expertise. He helped us to run some of the LBJs to ground at long last. Thanks for that, Ant, hope it didn't spoil your morning off!" See all these reviews: 6n in Botswana; 1n in Zambia
