"Muchenje Safari Lodge review"
The full day drive/boat is a great experience and nice to have the options of walks and early morning activities as well." See all these reviews: 12n in Botswana; 2n in Zambia
"Beautiful lodge over looking the flood plains"
The rooms are very comfortable with big beds good mosquito nets and shower facilities. The view was wonderful, with all the rooms looking out over the flood plains. If we had had more time, just a day to sit outside our room and watch the animals from there roaming around would have been lovely too.
The game drives were well organized and we saw so many animals. The guides knew the tracks so well, but there was always a mad rush at the end of each day to get out of the park before the gates closed at 6.30pm!! I'm sure this was done just to add to the excitement!! We had a lovely walk one morning with a guide called JJ who showed us various animal tracks and plants and we were lucky to be crossed by a herd of 200-300 Zebras.
The boat trip was also very special, which involved a long drive (70Km) on tarmac road towards Kasane and then another few kilometres across the bush onto the boat which took us down the Chobe River. We were able to spend ages just watching the elephants crossing the river from Botswana into Namibia, and picnic lunch with the Hippo's nearby. The lunch is not that brilliant but when you are hungry it's edible; (not a complaint just a comment)." See all these reviews: 8n in Namibia; 8n in Botswana; 1n in South Africa
"Muchenje Safari Lodge review"
I couldn't help the feeling that we "connected" less to the managers and many other guests, perhaps their concern was more on spoiling and luxurious feel than on experiencing nature. The guide for the morning walk was the best! Also the night drive was very nice." See all these reviews: 16n in Namibia; 2n in Botswana; 2n in Zambia
"Muchenje Safari Lodge review"
Loads and loads of wildlife in the park itself and around the lodge, but the night drives a bit naff! Vast herds of elephant, hippos and giraffe. Hoards of birds on the river got twitchers over-excited.
Welcoming, helpful, convivial managersand staff and excellent guides (BG, but also JJ who made himself available for a morning walk) who made the most of the opportunities around Chobe.
A fabulous place - even saw a honey badger on BGs' "short cut" - which should be compulsory!" See all these reviews: 12n in Zambia; 3n in Botswana
"Fantastic setting"
The staff were wonderful, and Sean made it feel like a private house party. Nothing was too much trouble for them. We loved it!" See all these reviews: 7n in Botswana
"Muchenje Safari Lodge review"
Aside from the river trip, the activity we enjoyed most at Muchenje was the visit to a local village compound and the school. This was our only chance on the trip to interact with the locals other than the staff at the camps, and we very much appreciated it. I encourage visitors to take advantage of this if they are at all interested in some interaction with the Botswana people. We also enjoyed the walk we took with JJ." "Muchenje - a beautiful lodge and location"
However, the food was average ( by English standards) and we would have preferred drinks ( beer and soft drinks) to be freely available to help ourselves to, as well as being served at the bar.
We were glad we had chosen to visit Chobe National Park from this location rather than the MUCH busier lodges nearer Kasane but the dpwn side was the drive to and from the entry point for each safari, especially cold in the open jeep at this time of year.
Chobe was great for the amount of animals we saw but we were disappointed not to see any of the big cats. We did however see a pack of 4 wild dogs but being the national park we could not follow them as they raced off to hunt.
The lodge packed in 3 safari drives a day as well as a short visit to a local tiny village and school. Worth doing for an insight into a completely different way of life with absolutely minimal possessions.
We had hoped to do a walking safari but the only guide qualified to do this was not available. The night drives were limited to the area near the lodge and were not very inspiring.
But the boat trip along the Chobe river was wonderful. Very relaxing and peaceful whenever the guides cut the engine which they did frequently. We saw many family groups of elephants , hippos and crocodiles on the banks as well as in the river, warthogs and mongoose, fish eagles, kingfishers and bee eater birds. Our guide was quite knowledgeable but not much fun, rather serious and we needed to ask lots of questions to find out more." See all these reviews: 6n in Botswana; 2n in Zambia
At Expert Africa we excited to hear that wild dogs were spotted in this area of Chobe National Park as this is a rare sighting in these parts!
