Arrived 11 Jul 2019, 1 night

Arusha Coffee Lodge is a popular hang-out with locals and expats and it has a welcoming and relaxed feel, even through it was quite crowded with lunch time groups when we last visited. The rooms are very comfortable, immaculately clean and finished to a high standard. The food is good and plentiful, and even if you're not staying the night, it's easy to while away a few hours here. Most visitors will probably use this as a place to eat and sleep – while driving into the Ngorongoro Crater during the day for their main activity.

The Manor is a graceful, peaceful and charming lodge with friendly and very professional staff, at a high price tag. This is a luxurious base for exploring the Ngorongoro Crater, and perhaps Lake Manyara – with one suite of rooms which is particularly family-friendly. We really liked the Afro-European architecture of The Manor, which is unlike any of the other plantation-style lodges in Tanzania. The mix of natural tones, classic furniture, polished wooden floors and traditional architecture – not to mention touches like the butler service per five guests, complimentary sherry in every room and a bubble bath awaiting you on your return from the crater – results in a smart colonial style that works well. Safari in Ngorongoro Crater
Day 5

Safari in Ngorongoro Crater

To drive into the Ngorongoro Crater is to immerse yourself in a renowned wildlife park. Prides of lion and clans of hyena patrol amongst herds of zebra, wildebeest and Thomson’s gazelle, whilst flocks of crowned cranes keep out the way of jackals. Come for elephants with big tusks, too. And then there are the rhino… Read all about Ngorongoro Crater safari

Opened December 2012, and located in south central Serengeti National Park, Serengeti Pioneer Camp is a smart tented camp with a touch of the early explorer about it. Built on a slope below a picturesque kopje, the camp setting retains a feeling of seclusion yet is well placed as a base for game drives across southern Serengeti's vast open plains.

Southern and central Serengeti has traditionally offered travellers the choice of simple to very good mid-range tented camps and large multi-roomed hotels. The relatively new Serengeti Pioneer Camp joins a very short list of high-quality, fairly luxurious permanent camps now found in this area. If guests aren't put off by some of the brazen colonial décor touches, and slightly over fussy service, then this tented camp is a great option for those seeking a little luxury. It's well-positioned on the quieter outskirts of a popular and very productive wildlife area. See our full report on Serengeti Pioneer Camp
