Very friendly staff albeit the location was a trifle remote and on a dirt road. A very good tour guide and an enjoyable 2 night stay

Desert Homestead helped celebrate Christmas

The Desert Homestead staff prepared a bag breakfast for us to leave at dawn to see Sossusvlei. On Christmas eve the staff gave every family a gift of a very nice bowl with snacks. On Christmas day we were given Champagne, and after dinner the staff and their children sang Christmas songs. The internet connection was excellent and we were able to Skype with our family in the United States.

The rooms were comfortable, but warm at this time of year. Some of our family members enjoyed sitting at the pool and having cool drinks in the afternoon.

We enjoyed the fact the Desert Homestead used solar hot water and solar electricity.

Desert Homestead review

A basic requirement of any hotel is that you get a good nights sleep. The rooms were so so hot with no A/C - sleep was impossible for both of us. The design of the "hut" attracted the heat of the desert and it was hotter inside than outside. Opening windows did not create cooling breeze.

Furnishings lovely but lack of sleep affected how I felt about these two days. Food poor and service "hit and miss". Location is 25mins from park entrance. We were told we could not go on their park visit which was full.

We were asked what time we wanted breakfast for early start to the park on our own guided visit (5) and did we want packed food. We waited 30minutes after agreed time but the place was locked up and no-one around - we therefore had the choice of arrive late or skip breakfast. I would not recommend staying here.

Expert Africa comments

We were sorry that these travellers had a disappointing stay at Desert Homestead. Like many of the lodges in the area, Desert Homestead doesn’t have air-conditioning in the rooms, and on this occasion clearly the fans and open windows were not sufficient in getting the room cool enough to sleep.

We normally advise travellers that activities can be booked on arrival at the lodge and this is the first time where this has not been the case due to lack of availability. We are sorry that these travellers were unable to join in the excursion and have noted to book activities at Desert Homestead in advance, if required, to avoid disappointment.

Desert Homestead have agreed that there was a failure in communication between employees, which lead to the absence of anyone to serve an early breakfast for which they are very sorry. They are working to ensure it doesn’t happen again.

LOVED IT!

We loved this place, great location and the chalets were so cute! The horse riding was great fun and we went walking up the hills as well. Very friendly staff and the food was good, although I felt it was quite 'safe' choices, but then I guess you have to try and please everyone.

Pool was a great way to cool down after horse riding. But what a great location! We arrived from the Solitaire side and we were a bit worried as there were no signs until literally opposite the lodge, but I can't stress how much we loved the location!

Desert Homestead review

Food and accommodation excellent. No trips on offer for the afternoon/evening we arrived, but the pool area was nice.

The trip to the dunes and Sossuvlei was brilliant even though it was freezing travelling there!

Desert Homestead review

They were upgrading the rooms when we were there and we were lucky to get a room that was already done. Rooms are nice with a great view of the desert. Staff is very friendly.

We travelled with a baby and a very nice touch was that they not only supplied a cot, but also a baby tub for him to have a bath on our veranda.

He enjoyed the most luxurious bath imaginable with a view of a breath taking sunset.

Good place to stay

An interestingly located lodge about 35km from Sesriem/Sossuvlei which are the main reasons I would imagine one would stay here. The drive up to the national park entrance to Sossuvlei takes about 30 minutes followed by a 40 minute drive through the park on a tarred road. The lodge offer a guided excursion to Sossuvlei but at 850 Nam $ each it seemed excessively expensive and we drove ourselves. The lodge also offers horse riding activities but we did not avail ourselves of these.

The rooms are small circular stone built which although well equipped (though again without a toilet door), do have a tendency to retain heat, even with the ceiling fan on. On the first night there we hardly spelt as it was so uncomfortably hot; opening the windows offsets much of the heat but it can be quite blowy.

The meals are taken in the main area which also houses a small swimming pool. The food was excellent and the service very good.
