Far from being the Ritz

The lodge is set very far from the road. One passes a lookout for the impressive Rostock Mountain well before reaching the lodge. Its best to take your photo there. The manager was quite flustered as he seemed the only staff at reception. He didn't even realise that the kitchen had purchased a number of food items that I had requested for me. Staff morale seemed low here.

The place has the cheapest construct I've come across on this trip. The funky looking white igloos are no longer white, having been covered up by the local stones to help keep them cool. They are still hot at night though. The very basic furniture inside is made of the same slate looking stones, or rusted metal. The room and bathroom were small, and felt uninviting. It looked more like a pioneer's hut from a century ago. The garden outside was even more unappealing.

The meercats that were featured in travellers photos earlier no longer visit the lodge very much. There was a path to follow if one wanted to go for walks, but the rocks strewn all along the path made it look unsafe.

I don't recommend this lodge even for an overnight based on my stay.

Expert Africa comments

We’re sorry that this traveller didn’t enjoy Rostock Ritz as we’d hoped. It in in a very rocky environment on the edge of the Namib and the rooms can get quite warm here.

Looking over her whole trip, this traveller commented that it was a trip ‘she wanted to forget’ and noted that her expectations of her destinations had been inappropriate. We take some blame for this: one of our key tasks in planning a trip is to try to match a travellers' expectations with the reality that they will experience. Clearly in this case we failed.

She comments that she "wasn't prepared for how backward Africans were” and that she’d found this trip to be "very taxing”. We’re really sorry this was the outcome. We think it’s important that you read this traveller's whole trip review to put her feedback in context.

As a company we would rather not organise a trip than send someone with badly misaligned expectations – but that seems to have been what happened here.

Desert heat, great view

Unusual spot, a short drive off the main road.

Being on higher ground gave us a fantastic view of the desert and mountains in the distance.

Although the conditions were very hot, the room remained reasonably cool, even without air-con.

Rostock Ritz review

Rostock Ritz provided a welcome break on a long drive to our next destination. The scenery all around is stunning and although the rooms are smaller than all the other places we visited, the view from our terrace was beautiful. We loved the swimming pool; again with wonderful views. Our meals were excellent and the meerkats were entertaining. We took a self guided walk, of which there are several to choose from and maps are provided. It was really good to take a hike and absorb our surroundings after sitting in a car for hours.

A lucky upgrade

Upgraded to superior room thanks to a coach party occupying the standard rooms, one night stop over was sufficient to complete an evening and morning walk.

Rescue meerkats were entertaining

Rostock Ritz paradise

Faultless as usual. Staff so friendly and helpful. Off road adventure was great fun. The only place off the beaten track that provides an a la carte menu which meant an oryx free night!
Various well marked walking trails.

Rostock Ritz review

A quirky, out-of-the-ordinary place to stay amidst breath-taking scenery. We loved walking on the ridge behind the lodge, looking at the rocks and the staggeringly beautiful landscape.

The room was a bit cramped and we would have appreciated a coffee/tea maker since the main dining area was a short walk away.

The father-son team managing the place (sorry! can't remember their names) were friendly and supplied us some useful reference books (which we'd been keen to consult) so we could look things up.

Unexpected Delight at Rostock Ritz

We would have enjoyed another day here to explore its fascinating landscape. The well-marked trail system offers a great variety of rock formations and plant life, outstanding views, and wildlife. The meerkats, both in rehab and in the wild, were entertaining to watch. Everyone was helpful, and our meals excellent--though we did spend more than anticipated.

The igloo-shaped rooms are an interesting feature, but a little more cramped than most of our stays.

Rostock Ritz review

Wonderful setting and a great place to stay on the dusty drive between Sossusvlei and the coast. If you like walking stay for more than one night as the walking is great.

We had a family room which was spacious and comfortable with great views. The pool is beautiful (bring wetsuits in July and August unless you enjoy cold water swimming - water temp 14 degrees C! ) and the meerkats down went down well with us all. Food pleasant but not as good as guidebooks might suggest. If you do one walk do the Ugab springs walk

Could do better

Location very good and facilities. Service a lot to be desired as was the welcome. Host appeared to lack managerial skills.
Fawlty Towers comes to mind
