"Strand Hotel review"

3 nights Arrived 24 Oct 2024
"The road to Swakupmund via Solitaire was one of the worst we experienced but thanks to Chris's guidebook we were armed with a picnic (from Solitaire) and were prepared to drive very slowly.
Good/easy directions to The Strand with good parking.

Great location I the middle of town. Excellent/friendly welcome and a nice room.

The lobby is beautiful but we think the weather (wet, rain, heat etc..) is very hard on buildings and things in the rooms aren't perfect.

Excellent breakfast. We dined twice at one of the hotel restaurants. We went the first night and it was so good we went back. In a country where so much meat is served it was a joy to eat fish! It is called Ocean Cellar and booking is essential.

We did not use the gym or other hotel facilities." See all these reviews: 19n in Namibia

2 nights Arrived 4 Jul 2024
"Lovely hotel - location is amazing and the rooms were great - they also were able to accommodate us in moving closer to the elevator!

It felt larger that I had hoped which is it’s only downfall as many tour groups were at the property too and it lost that intimate feel! Granted it is in a bigger city!

We would stay here again and were very happy with the hotel" See all these reviews: 10n in Namibia

"Magnificent Sea View at Strand Hotel"

2 nights Arrived 8 Jun 2024
"The huge advantage of the Strand Hotel over any other B&B or hotel in town is the location. Directly over the quai and adjacent to the beach.

Water in June was cold: 11°C, a few courageous tourists & locals go swimming anyway, and our eldest son did too... . No road or traffic between the hotel and the water. Make sure you book a room with a view on the Atlantic Ocean. Another big plus are the 3 restaurants attached to the Strand Hotel, all with terrasse. The seafood restaurant is good. At breakfast we could enjoy from the terrasse the dolphins hunting in the bay.

Also not far away from the iconic The Tug Restaurant, The Tug offers shuttles back & forth to the hotel for N$50 p. p. (useful at night). Disadvantage of the Strand Hotel is the size with 125 rooms, more tourists around and less privacy and attention you may get in smaller & more exclusive lodges around Namibia.

This is a 4 star hotel, not a 5 star luxury lodge. Do not miss to stop in Walvis Bay to see the pelicans, flamingos & seals. Or even push South another 45km from Walvis Bay to Sandwich Harbour (we did not manage).

If you are heading South or coming from the South (Sossusvlei), the service station in Solitaire is a good hint: Shop for repairs and excellent apple pie at the bakery." See all these reviews: 21n in Namibia

"Strand Hotel review"

2 nights Arrived 26 Apr 2024
"On the road:
Little Kulala to Swakopmund C27-C19-C14
C14 was undoubtedly the worst road of the trip. Dust blowing over the car even without other cars on the road. Visibility very poor and the gravel road is in terrible condition. Very dangerous overtaking when you can’t see what’s ahead or behind. Forced to approach the brow of the hill on the left which is always the patch of road in the worst condition. Anyway survived it!

Kuiseb Pass - scene of the accident on 24th April in which 2 people died
Gaub Pass to Walvis Bay - very flat, desolate expanse, very bleak
Walvis Bay - a low point, not much to recommend it. Drove through the wrong end of town and felt quite hustled. All a bit aggressive and nasty. Missing the lovely desert.

Strand Hotel, Swakopmund
Upsides:
V pleasant staff at the hotel.
Ate at the hotel’s Farmhouse Deli where they serve really good giant pizzas (one is enough for 2)
Breakfast at the Strand is superb.
2nd night ate at The Tug - it had been recommended by friends but we found it a bit of a tourist trap with prices to match. But it was very convenient and we walked to/from the hotel.

Downsides: Being in a town (!)
Sudden plummet in temperature, had to wear every item of clothing we had" See all these reviews: 20n in Namibia

"A lovely, modern, hotel in a very good central location.

Well-appointed and staff helpful and friendly. Excellent restaurants, and a superb buffet breakfast.

Our room had a sea view which gave the opportunity to experience a different view of how the residents, as opposed to visitors, enjoyed their fantastic location.

Overall, excellent accommodation for experiencing the town." See all these reviews: 16n in Namibia; 2n in Botswana; 1n in Zimbabwe
