Lagoon Lodge: Our full report

The bright yellow Lagoon Loge is located right next to Walvis Bay Lagoon, which attracts numerous species of birds.

Run by Frenchman Wilfred Meiller, the guesthouse uses the French spelling of 'lodge', causing locals much confusion!

Although most visitors base themselves in Swakopmund, Lagoon Loge offers a homely welcome for those who wish to stay in Walvis Bay. Its eight en-suite rooms are individually decorated with different themes. Considerable thought and imagination has gone into the room design, with various paintings and murals on the walls. Highlights include the colourful ‘seaside’ room, complete with a beach hut used as a cupboard, and the ‘bird’ room, where paintings of birds cover the walls. All the rooms have private balconies with views overlooking the lagoon, as well as tea and coffee facilities, TVs and telephones. Please note that although the lodge has good views of the lagoon the D1986 road runs between the two. This road is a fairly major road by Namibian standards and can be busy.

Three of the rooms can be used as family rooms sleeping between 3 and 5 people. In these rooms there are generally two twin beds with further sofas and fold out beds that can be used for children.

The main area of the lodge is a bright and airy lounge, breakfast room and reception area all rolled into one. A series of wall paintings dominate the room, where tables are set among various items of carved furniture, some of it made by Wilfred, a keen wood-turner. Large glass windows allow guests to look out over the lagoon while at breakfast. WiFi is available throughout.

At the back of Lagoon Loge is a pretty garden, filled with flowers and a small pool. There is also a sundowner/viewing deck, on the lodges roof terrace, the perfect place to enjoy the sun, watch the sunset with a drink, or admire the flamingos and other birds on the lagoon.

Activities in Swakopmund and Walvis Bay can be booked here, and Helen and Wilfred are also happy to make table reservations at any of the local restaurants. If you are planning on heading out on one or more of the excursions that go through Walvis Bay, then a stay here will allow a slightly later start than having to come south from Swakopmund.
