"Elephant pepper camp."

4 nights Arrived 13 Nov 2018
"What can I say about Alison and Tom and the elephant pepper camp, well I did tell them that I would tell everyone it was awful, dirty, lousy food, terrible accommodation. It isn't. I had the best time. I was fortunate because I was the only guest in the camp, but my fun began the minute i was picked up at the " airport " James met me and he would be my guide throughout my stay. His thoughtfulness started as I tried to get in the vehicle, ( have you seen the size of those things?!!!) Well my legs aren't good and one doesn't bend well, and James just gently helped me, all the time asking me what I wanted to see most, well it had to be a leopard, I hadn't seen one, so he promptly veered off the road ( a term used lightly) drove fast for about 5 mins and there was a leopard sitting on a branch of a tree, how on earth he knew where to go , he hadn't been on the radio or phone, and he did this the whole time i was there.

He found a pride of lions. 3 lioness and 8 cubs of different ages, one of the lionesses was watching a warthog, so James moved the car so we could see and she stalked and then chased, only to be helped by a cub who got in the way , so they missed the warthog that time. One evening we were late back to camp after the afternoon drive and James saw a lion, full mane in all his glory just sitting under a tree, well he was 50 meters away and he roared, well, James just said he's calling his brothers so we will wait, fine says me! As long as they realise Australian blood doesn't taste good, Kenyan blood, that's ok, just not Aussie, well he just laughed, as two more lions came up, then all three got up, sauntered over to the truck looked at us, and laid down right next to me. I kid you not I was a little concerned, so then came brother no. 4 to join them, so by this time, with no moon out it was pitch black, and then you hear this 1 little rumble , then a second answered, and then one let rip, I swear that roar came from his boots, the car shook from the vibrations, and I nearly.............. James just sat and laughed. So we stayed a few more minutes and then went back to camp. Every day I was at either bush camp I went back excited over something that I had encountered that day.

We had one very sad occurrence, when we went out one day we saw a male lion playing with a litter of 4 cubs, we sat and watched them for at least half an hour, crying, looking for milk, but crawling all over him, he moved his massive paws out of the way so they could move,,,,he was just so gentle with them. We went back to camp for lunch and another guide came in and said he saw the male squash one kittens head with his paw, and one of he managers went out to the spot and saw definate signs that he had killed and eaten all of them, which apparently happens when they are not his cubs.

I saw everything , I saw 2 cheetahs do a chase, I saw a leopard meal just hanging from a tree, I learnt the way they tell the lions apart ( by their whisker holes and notches out of ears) . There was a market day in the village while I was there, definitely a must see, the beautiful necklaces, the enormous holes in some of the men's ears, the lovely women, but all they want to do is touch you, which is a bit daunting. They love having their picture taken though.

Sadly it came to my last day. I goaded James, I told him I hadn't seen a vulture. Would you believe he found a nest with a pair in, then found the male of another breed, I couldn't believe either him or my luck. For someone who doesn't take photos, my camera needed 4 new sets of batteries because of the number of pics taken just in the camps.

I can honestly say that I cannot think of an animal that I haven't seen, from bustards to vultures and the delightfully brilliant startling, to the wildebeest and the big cats. It was so educational, from habitats to mannerisms and identification. I go home a tired but extremely happy lady." See all these reviews: 11n in Kenya; 2n in Zimbabwe

"Elephant Pepper review"

3 nights Arrived 25 Jul 2018
"Firstly and most importantly our guide, George, was a real pleasure to spend three days with. His determination to make sure we saw everything the Mara could offer and his sense of humour made a big difference to our trip and his infectious laugh will stay with us for a long time.

We'd seen comments about the camp's lack of flexibility but this must be a thing of the past. Whatever we wanted to do and whenever we wanted to do it was fine with Alison and Tom." See all these reviews: 9n in Kenya

"Wall to wall wildlife!"

8 nights Arrived 6 Mar 2018
"The wildlife in this area far exceeded my expectations. An extraordinary number of lion cubs, and with mating lions and mating leopards seen, more cubs on the way. Other game was plentiful, some people saw an aardwolf, and I was delighted to see two dens with bat eared foxes.

The accommodation is superb. Large well furnished and equipped tents, with plenty of 'windows ' well lit at night and with a view from the front deck, of passing wildlife. This is a camp for those who prefer to have the home comforts of constant piped hot water and wifi, while they are in the bush.

The camp is very well organised and friendly, managed with love and efficiency by a couple, Alison and Tom. All of the staff were excellent, but Alison and Tom in particular, add much to the experience, for guests staying at this camp. There is a significant degree of flexibility with regard to activities. Some guests chose an early dinner followed by a night game drive, while others wanted a late dinner after their night drive." See all these reviews: 9n in Kenya

"Loved Elephant Pepper"

3 nights Arrived 29 Aug 2015
"Lovely tents - decorated in Raj colonial style .
Lots of brass fittings, paw print ash trays , lamps and a phonogram.
One tent had sofas and drinks available from a fridge or shelf ( help-yourself anytime) . Ice available . Comfy sofas
USB charging available
Another tent for dining, long table - nicely decorated
One called the library tent - charge cameras etc..
Tents have bathrooms with twin sinks ( brass) loo and partially concealed shower.
Bucket showers - hot water put through large flap in tent 6am
Can have hot water for showers anytime
Tents feel well designed but simple
Tents 1-3 are on one side of communal, areas . Tents 4-10 are in the other side
All furniture looks like it came from " Out of Africa.com"
Lovely old-fashioned deck chairs around fire.
The tents have lots of shrubs between them which gives some privacy but might need to zip up flaps between tents if shrubbery not sufficient to give total privacy
Number 1 and 10 are honeymoon/ family tents and have hot water on tap . Bush showers for other tents
Nice food ( vegetarian)
BTW - drinks were included although we were told they were not.
They also issue you with a collapsible plastic bottle ( good plastic - not the type that leach nasty chemicals into the water)
you can fill it from the water cooler in the dining tent and take it with you on game drives or use it around camp.( And take it home with you !)
Staff were all lovely and helpful - loved our stay there.

( BTW - this camp is also not dismantled at the end of the season either . It takes 30 men to put up the dining tent alone!
So they just wash all the fabric and smarten it all up at the beginning of the season)" See all these reviews: 12n in Kenya

"Luxurious stay at EPC"

4 nights Arrived 24 Jul 2015
"We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Elephant Pepper Camp (EPC). We were here four nights, and were greatly spoiled. The staff and hosts were attentive and thoughtful; the food was excellent. I also left as a HUGE fan of the conservancies. The stay included one trip into the Masai Mara Preserve, and I'm glad that we went - and also glad that we only went once. We had gotten spoiled with the smaller crowds at the Lewa Conservancy and the Mara North Conservancy (home of EPC), and while we did see elusive cheetahs in Mara Preserve, the crowds left a bad taste in our mouth.

In contrast, the game drives in the Mara North Conservancy, around EPC at least, were very productive and enjoyable. Our guide, Francis, was very patient and had an eagle eye and was attentive to our wishes, which were to observe the wildlife in a "low impact" way.

I would recommend this site, and this Conservancy, very highly to anyone who wanted to visit, including my family, who have gained an interest in safaris based on our trip. The Camp truly is a "camp," with animals wandering through at night - this limited our ability to move throughout the camp, somewhat, without a guard - but that was just a minor annoyance, and an experience I'm glad that we had. Lions and hyena sounds at night!! Exciting!" See all these reviews: 9n in Kenya
