deserves its description as a "flagship lodge

A most impressive lodge with individual houses scattered in a camelthorn tree wood.

Super staff and excellent food. Had quite the best cheetah experience I've ever had -- two brother setting off on the hunt and later that day devouring a waterbuck calf.

Also enjoyed a delightful 2 hour walk through beautiful country.

See elephants really close at Camelthorn

Please see separate comments already given on Camelthorn - location and rooms are preferences rather than absolute (opinions on) quality - others may love them.
We had only limited experience of food :-(

Activities potentially, but not actually, limited by guide availability. The elephant hide is brilliant.

Expert Africa comments

These guests commented that they preferred tented accommodation such as that found at Bomani over the more substantial brick and mortar of Camelthorn Lodge. They also mentioned that they preferred the more open views over the pan at Bomani rather than the more forested surroundings of Camelthorn.

One of the members of this party in particular was struck down by a stomach bug which was affecting people in the area at this time. We were very sorry to hear this but also very happy to read that the camp staff did all they could to help, themselves often not feeling very well and affected by the same bug.

Lions and elephants

Within hours of arriving at Camelthorn after traversing a very bumpy 50kms track towards Hwange National Park, we saw lions. Thereafter Aubrey, our guide, positively spoiled us by finding yet more lions and several large herds of elephant.

The 'heartbeat of Hwange' is the drum-drum-drum of diesel powered pumps, but without them in the dry season there would be few animals in the area. At the lodge itself there is no noise only the kind of food that would make the cook a rich man if he were serving it at a restaurant in London!
