"Gibb's Farm review"

3 nights Arrived 13 Jul 2008
"Gibbs Farm is very professionally run, more like a business and a bit removed from the African safari experience.
The Location is between both Lake Manyara & Ngorongoro Crater, about 1 hour drive from each. As the location is quiet high up it can get a little cool in the mornings & evenings.

The room we had Ngorongoro as it was called was one of the bigger lodges. The room was very impressive with 2 double beds and an indoor and outdoor shower (too cold to go out though). There was also a fireplace there as well which we made use of one night as it was chilly.

The staff were very friendly and looking to help where they could.

The food was excellent with most of the vegetables & fruit grown on the farm. There was loads to choose from in the morning & lunch time, dinner you didn't have as many choices but the quality was the same.

We had a day out here instead of going back to the crater for a second day and had a nice tour around the farm. You can also do an Elephant Cave tour as well ($10), but we didn't do it.

Overall we were really impressed with Gibbs, very well run and gives loads of employment to the locals. Just maybe a bit too removed from the rest of the Tanzania experience, as they seemed to be into $$$ as they charged for everything compared to the other places." "Stay at Gibbs"

2 nights Arrived 22 Feb 2008
"We had two nights at Gibbs with a visit to the Ngongoro crater in the middle. Our room at Gibbs was fantastic - we were in one of the renovated cottages.

Overall Gibbs was good, but just missed out on being great. Little things let it down like the water in the jugs in our room not being filled up, and although we were told that we could get some things ironed and they would be picked up from the room, no-one turned up for them. The other thing about Gibbs is that after the very personal service you get in the small tented camps it feels a bit large and soulless. The food was good (but not excellent) and the scrambled eggs at breakfast had obviously been pre-cooked and were very dry. We enjoyed the walk we took around the farm.

Just one little warning about leaving your things in the vehicle. We left a pair of binoculars in the vehicle whilst we were at Gibbs. The driver took the vehicle into Karatu, a town close by, to get it washed and our binoculars went missing. The driver got them back for us by going back to the guy who washed the car and threatening him with the police, but we might not have been so lucky. I'm sure you're OK leaving things in the vehicle whilst at the mobile tented camps but it's not a good idea to leave things in it at other busier places.

We had been to Ngorongoro before and although we enjoyed our second trip there we were not as awestruck as the first time. Also it was a pretty long drive from Gibbs to the crater. Last time we stayed on the crater rim and really liked being able to view the mist over the crater early in the morning and to hear the masai cowbells as they moved their cattle.

In addition the crater was very busy - lots more vehicles than when we went last time (about 8/9 years ago). We also found out how much they charge for a vehicle, driver and passengers to get into the crater (£300) and if we had known we might not have gone." See all these reviews: 12n in Tanzania

"In the coffee plantation"

3 nights Arrived 5 Aug 2007
"We arrived after a long trip from London to find ourselves in a fantastic lodge in the middle of the 'no where'. The terrace of our bungalow looked onto a 'botantical' garden - as did the restaurant - which we have only ever encountered in a Botantical Garden.

The food was excellent and flavoursome. The staff were friendly and helpful.

A great start to a great holiday." See all these reviews: 10n in Zanzibar; 3n in Tanzania
