Beyt al Chai review
Hotel was fine, although perhaps has seen better days. Restaurant was excellent!

The location is lovely opposite the Serena Inn. The rooms give you a sense of what it must have been like to stay in Zanzibar 80 years ago with the shutters and the ambience.
Russell the manager could not have been more helpful and the rest of the staff were very nice.
The retaurant is wonderful, the air con welcome and the food absolutely lovely.
The big downside is the shower in the room. It is completely out of keeping with a high quality hotel. The bathroom looked lovely but the shower was awful. It was the sort of shower I would expect in a bad B&B in Wales! I dont know when the hotel is due for refurbishment but the showers really cannot wait.

This was a funky, unique and lovely building. However, it did not work for our last night in Tanzania.
Given that we had to go to the airport at 5 a.m., we were not able to partake in the breakfast part of this B&B. They said they would leave some fruit for us, but they must have forgotten as it was not in the fridge.
Maybe it was that we were in "go home mode", but we were not impressed.

Excellent location overlooking a shady square near to the sea, charming old Zanzibari guesthouse, more a restraunt with rooms, than hotel. The honesty bar in a lovely lounge is a nice touch.
Russell walked through Stonetown with us pointing out places of interest, which was very helpful.
Our room was on the top floor and was nice and airy with the windows open, at night the air con and fan kept the room very cool. The tea and coffee in the room was good.
We enjoyed dinner at Beyt al Chai after a day's sigtseeing unaccompanied, it seemed much better to wander and get lost in the maze of narrow streets than be shepherded along by a guide, a useful map was provided when we checked in. We would recommend a sundowner at the Africa House which is nearby, followed by dinner at Beyt al Chai which was exceptionally good.

Lovely restored home converted into a boutique hotel - and a v nice welcome from the staff upon check in.
However the rooms were not "comfortable" especially the bed and the bathroom was oddly part of the same room - just in a corner.
A nice place to stay is Beyt al Chai
Noted for its food which is very good and not highly priced..........excellent value.
The hotel is really a B & B grown into a small hotel and thus has a nice warm feeling to it.
Again the staff could not do enough for us.
Beyt al Chai was a trip into history
We only stayed one night and the island had no electricity and we had to rely on hotel generator when it was switched on. Room was airconditioned, which was essential and pleasant, but bathroom bit basic with cracked loo seat.
Superb restaurant on ground floor, specialising in seafood.
