In the middle of the northern Kalahari lie a series of huge, flat salt pans.
In the dry season, these form vast expanses of dry, silvery salt.
In some places you see scrubby grass; in some nothing but the earth's curvature in salt ...
... and in other places you will spot islands of grass, dotted with palm trees.
The wildlife here is not usually dense - often it's the smaller things that are interesting ...
... birds like the yellow-billed hornbill ...
... and bands of playful meerkats.
There are just a couple of camps built right beside the pans...
... including the tiny San Camp, with its white-canvas tents in traditional styles.
The famous Jack's Camp is set up on a larger palm island ...
... beautifully constructed in a classical safari style.
Jack's Camp is more luxurious than it used to be, and recently even gained a swimming pool.
Activities on the pans range from walks guided by bushmen ...
... through quad biking excursions ...
... and 4WD trips which vary from short sorties to full-day drives ...
... sometimes with great dinners in the middle of nowhere on the pans.
The west side of Makgadikgadi Pans National Park is bounded by the often-dry Boteti River ...
... and beside this are one or two camps, including Meno A Kwena Tented Camp.
In the river valley in front of camp, there is a hide overlooking a busy waterhole ...
... which attracts some entertaining big game in the dry season.
