Hilltop Guesthouse: Our full report
Hilltop Guesthouse (aka Hilltop Guest House) is a Bavarian-style house situated in a cul-de-sac in a quiet residential area on the north side of Windhoek, in a suburb called Klein Windhoek. It was built in the 1950s as an art studio, making it quite old by Windhoek's standards. As its name implies, it is located on the top of a hill with great views over the surrounding suburbs of Windhoek below and the mountains beyond.
Hilltop Guesthouse was formerly run as Hilltop House and throughout the early 2000's it was one of our favorites in Windhoek. In 2010 Hilltop House was sold and was no longer operating as a Guesthouse. We are delighted to report that this great little guesthouse has now been taken over and re-branded as Hilltop Guesthouse. Under the new management Hilltop Guesthouse is full of promise and renewed purpose.
Hilltop Guesthouse has seven rooms and all are decorated in a clean, modern style with African touches and all mod-cons. There are three spacious luxury rooms, all located upstairs in the house, and three standard rooms downstairs leading directly onto the pool terrace. There is also a separate free-standing cottage in the grounds. This is very small and is generally sold as a single room. Steep steps lead to the cottage which makes access challenging especially in the dark. Breakfast is not included in the rate if staying in the cottage.
The upstairs rooms are large and spacious and have been stylishly decorated and furnished with brown or olive green tones and a splash of orange or red added with scatter cushions or a throw. The beds have padded headboards at the head and a luggage rack at the foot. These rooms still have the original floorboards which have been carefully restored. Each room has air-conditioning, satellite TV, a hairdryer, tea and coffee facilities (including an espresso coffee machine), and a small fridge, which can be stocked on request.
The en-suite bathrooms have a toilet, freestanding tiled shower and double basins set in a wooden counter top. Toiletries are provided.
The upstairs bedrooms at Hilltop Guesthouse each have access to the an Oregon pine wooden balcony which runs around two sides of the Guesthouse. Here each room has its own table and chairs for enjoying breakfast outside, however there are also a table and chairs inside each room for less pleasant days.
Hilltop Guesthouse doesn't have any communal lounge or dining area, but its pretty garden has a lovely swimming pool and an adjoining wooden deck dotted with loungers, chairs and tables where breakfast can also be enjoyed under the shade of a large jacaranda tree. It's also a great place to watch the evening colours of the sky as the sun sinks, and keen bird-watchers report that it's a good spot for bird-watching.
Our viewWe recommend Hilltop Guest as a base in Windhoek for a first or last night in Namibia. Following a brief visit in November 2015, we were very impressed with the changes that have been made and are very keen to once again promote this lovely little Guesthouse.
