Majete is fast becoming Malawi’s most interesting wildlife reserve.
Home to the both the gentle, shallow Mkulumadzi River …
… and the much faster, deeper Shire River…
… with its magnificent rapids ...
... and picturesque Kapichira Falls.
Unusually, for such a fast river, you’ll find plenty of hippos and large crocodiles in the Shire.
In recent years, the reserve has been restocked ...
... and now has significant numbers of buffalo ...
... and elephant.
Impala are probably the most common antelope …
… and you’ll also find good numbers of waterbuck …
… and judging by the crèche that we saw crossing a road …
.. healthy populations of eland.
The vegetation in Majete is lush …
… so sometimes you have to work to see the wildlife.
But try hard and you’ll be rewarded with some unusual species …
… like the magnificent sable ...
… or the beautiful nyala.
On our last brief visit, most of the wildlife was pretty relaxed, like this troop of baboons …
... who didn’t want to leave the road.
Whilst the obvious way to explore the park is by 4WD …
… and there’s a good network of roads here …
... the reserve is good for walking safaris ...
… and the wide, shallow Mkulumadzi River makes a great corridor for these.
