"Exceeded our expectations in every way"

2 nights Arrived 30 Jul 2008
"Previous feedback on Okaukuejo had led us to expect a rather down-market experience. In every way this place exceeded our expectations. Check-in was prompt and we knew that we would be required to deposit N$500 (we were only charged one deposit for two rooms). Bush rooms were clean, tidy and decently sized. Only one of our two rooms had a inventory present and an ice-tray was missing from the fridge; we did inform reception who didn't seem too interested.

Swimming pools and grounds were beautiful and overall impression is that this place is good enough to compete with any resort hotel in the world. Restaurant meals in the evening were rather a scrum with significant queues for main courses, but choice was wider than anywhere else we visited and quality was excellent . Second evening ate at 1830 rather than 1900 and avoided most of the queuing.

Some info we read in the UK before departure suggested that Okaukuejo had an ATM and internet cafe, but neither were present and nearest bank was south at Outjo. Hotel and park fees can be paid by credit card, but don't rely on topping up cash reserves here.
We spent hours at the water hole, both during day and at night. Constant visits from big groups of large and small animals. Just fantastic.

During our full day at Okaukuejo, we explored the furtherest western water holes and found these teaming with life, but with few other visitors. Didn't feel need to take guided tour, and managed to see virtually every animal that we wanted at a pace that suited ourselves. After checking out we drove through park eastwards and were rewarded with numerous close encounters of the animal kind.

Before coming to Namibia we thought that we would be lucky to get close enough to get decent photos of any of the big animals. In the event we were regularly stopping the car to allow deer, giraffe and elephant to cross the road immediately in front of us. We have returned home with 6Gb of pictures and 5 hours of video. This place is outstanding." See all these reviews: 14n in Namibia

"Much smarter than 13 years ago!"

2 nights Arrived 20 Jul 2008
"In Etosha the first choice is whether you stay in the park or not. We think that staying in the park is the right way to go as it cuts down on the amount of driving you do each day to get in there and you have the signfiicant advantage of the night time game viewing at the waterholes at the ldoegs (when we came back from dinner the first night we stayed there were more than 30 elephants and 3 rhinos at the Okaukuejo waterhole!)

The revamped lodge rooms are much smarter than they were and of a good standard, if a bit cramped. The food is a bit canteen like and outside of the canteen there is little in the way of self-catering faiclities in the rooms." See all these reviews: 11n in Namibia

"Okaukuejo Restcamp review"

2 nights Arrived 18 Jul 2008
"We had a luxury bungalow by the waterhole which was superb. We were less impressed by the main complex which was the only place in Namibia that we went to that felt over-touristy.

The waterhole provided excellent game viewing.

Great swimming pool." See all these reviews: 14n in Namibia

"Wonderful waterhole at Okaukuejo Restcamp"

2 nights Arrived 15 Jul 2008
"Comfortable bungalow facing busy waterhole. Excellent buffet dinner, entertained by children singing to raise money for their school. Nice pool area. Enjoyed walking around restcamp and the restful time watching the game visit waterhole.

Camp pass - we arrived for a 2 day stay at 2.30pm. Problem was that the pass expired at 2.30 after 2 days, which means that we had to exit the other gate by this time, or buy another day pass. I feel that the pass should be for a full day if arriving after 1.00pm." See all these reviews: 13n in Namibia

"really good stuff and REALLY bad!"

1 night Arrived 14 Jul 2008
"Very nice rooms, pool, buildings, location, water hole!

HOWEVER, Jill and I have rarely had a worse dinning experience in our life! The food was AWFUL and the set up was like we were back in summer camp only with really pretty plates! Sure we had this whole cool selection of "wild game" meat to try. All of which was so tough and over cooked that we could hardly cut it.

The guys working there had no personality (except for the lady who sat us). And they could not keep up with the volume needed to feed everyone there. BAD BAD BAD Someones job needs to be re-evaluated!" See all these reviews: 19n in Namibia

"Okaukuejo Restcamp review"

3 nights Arrived 13 Jul 2008
"The overall Etosha experience was memorable and the location of our cabins ideal - persuading one member of our party to travel more than the 25 yards from cabin to water hole proved difficult!

Given the number of visitors being catered for, both standards of food and service were entirely acceptable - tho' prices in the shop took advantage of the captive population. We found that staying in the park - not least at opening and closing times -
more than outweighed the attractions of perhaps more salubrious accommodation elsewhere.

Three nights good, four even better." See all these reviews: 14n in Namibia

"Okaukuejo Restcamp review"

2 nights Arrived 7 Jul 2008
"We were disappointed to find that although we had booked a chalet adjacent to the water hole it turned out that there was a row of chalets in front of us and we could not actually see the water hole from our chalet, although it was only a hundred yards or so away. The chalet was also semi detached which we had not expected.

We did ask to be upgraded and offered tp pay the difference (the chalets closest to the water hole are considerably larger) but, even though one of the larger chalets was empty for the duration of our stay, the office staff would not consider this. We found the administration of this camp to be unnecessarily beauracratic and the staff unhelpful. The restaurant was large and impersonal and the food disappointing.

However we would not have missed staying here as the wildlife at the water hole was amazing and made up for everything. One of the most exciting moments was near sunset when a herd of elephants appeared on the horizen and hurried towards the water for a drink and bathe.

We also watched rhino, at one time there were four together, drinking after sunset at the, by then, floodlit water hole." See all these reviews: 25n in Namibia

"Okaukuejo Restcamp review"

2 nights Arrived 1 Jul 2008
"This has to be judged as a large enterprise. It is busy and the personal touch is lacking. BUT the location with the great waterhole and its wild animals is a must for visitors to Etosha. Our Premium, waterhole chalet was luxuious and well maintained, as is the whole camp. NWR do a good job here, and even the restaurant - in constant flux and demand - offers a good service, if without frills. People are friendly.

Because the waterhole is so impressive, often after dark, the advice to stay here - within the park - is sound and a stay here is likely to be very rewarding." See all these reviews: 14n in Namibia

"Okaukuejo Restcamp review"

2 nights Arrived 20 Jun 2008
"Think it was my misunderstanding but I thought Waterhole chalets actually overlooked the waterhole as opposed to just being close to it so I was a bit disappointed on arrival. The rooms are beautifully done but a bit on the cramped side compared to everywhere else. However we had a great experience at Etosha overall.

Staff rated as less helpful than elsewhere. Small example, we checked in after long dusty drive. Went to our chalet and stripped off for a shower. No water. Got dressed, walked back to reception and they said "Oh yes, its a problem all over site, they are working on it" I've no problem with this at all but it might have been sensible to mention it at check in before we went to our room." "Stunning Waterhole"

2 nights Arrived 19 Jun 2008
"The restcamp is ideally situated to explore the southern end of the park but by far it's greatest asset is the floodlit waterhole. We were fortunate enough to see a herd of elephants at sunset on our second night, followed by 5 black rhino after dark!! If visiting in winter you will need to wrap up warm as it does become very cold, very quickly.

Our accommodation was basic, but clean and well maintained. From the outside the rooms do look like old fashioned Butlins chalets but were comfortable enough. We were pleasantly suprised by the high standard of service and the quality of the food at the restaurant. After reading reviews elsewhere we were a little worried about what to expect from the restcamp but it turned out to be a very enjoyable 2 night stay." See all these reviews: 11n in Namibia
