Meerkat Self-drive Safari

Explore the wildly remote Kgaladgai Transfrontier Park from four simple, self-catered bases before concluding with two nights at Augrabies Falls National Park. An exciting safari including varied game and birdlife, well-suited to the autonomous traveller.

Meerkat Self-drive Safari: Summary

Meerkat Self-drive Safari in a nutshell

Situated at the north of the Cape, the Kgaladgai Transfrontier Park offers a magical wilderness experience. It is especially remote and difficult to reach, a factor which ensures a relatively exclusive safari and one which makes it a highly specialist trip.

The route features four simple, self-catered lodges within the park, concluding with a further two nights at Augrabies Falls Restcamp within Augrabies Falls National Park. The first four bases are comfortable and best suited to those whose priority is to spend time out in the park. They are well-positioned bases that offer no activities or meals, making them great for travellers who know what they’re doing and how they would like to do it.

Kgaladgai’s expansive, sweeping plains are especially good for cheetah sightings and there are large populations of both meerkat and blue wildebeest. The contrasting Kalahari dunes and fossil river valleys provide varied habitat for a range of species, and game and birdlife sightings here can be spectacular, especially early in the year, shortly after the rains.

After exploring this wild and remote park at leisure, you will drive south towards Augrabies Falls National Park. Here, the climate is arid and subject to large temperature fluctuations. The wildlife is impressively adapted however, and the park is home to at least 46 mammal species as well as over 186 bird species and a variety of interesting reptiles. A range of walking and hiking routes provide a chance to stretch your legs whilst 4WD drives in your own vehicle offer ample opportunity to enjoy views of the spectacular falls.

Twee Rivieren Rest Camp

Day 1

Twee Rivieren Rest Camp stands at the southern entrance to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and doubles as its administration centre; it's often your first and/or last stop within this super park. Twee Rivieren is the largest camp in the park with the best amenities; in contrast to many privately-owned safari lodges, this feels like a small village, complete with a park's office, a fuel station, a shop, a restaurant and plenty of small chalets and bungalows spread around.

Grootkolk Wilderness Camp

Days 2-4

Grootkolk Camp, like Kalahari Tented Camp and Bitterpan Camp, is a wilderness camp built within the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. While considerably more substantial than the restcamps within the park, these are by no means safari lodges.

View full itinerary

Kalahari Tented Camp

Days 4-6

Kalahari Tented Camp, on the western border of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, is an excellent camp in a good location within the national park. Similar to both Bitterpan Wilderness Camp and Grootkolk Wilderness Camp, Kalahari Tented Camp offers a more typical safari experience.

Kielie Krankie Wilderness Camp

Day 6

Kielie Krankie Wilderness Camp is only a short drive from Twee Rivieren meaning that if you want to get out into the wilds of the Kgalagadi on your first night this is the place for you. It has four cabins built on top of dunes, with a waterhole just below.

Augrabies Falls Restcamp

Days 7-9

The government-run Augrabies Falls Restcamp is set in very pretty surroundings and offers a friendly welcome. Large and well organised, it is the only place to stay inside Augrabies Falls National Park and so makes a good base from which to explore this lovely park in the northern Cape.
