Halali Restcamp review
A tired camp which looks dated compared to other camps in the park.
The food was dreadful!
Halali Restcamp review
It is bit come down after staying at Okaukuejo Restcamp. The good point of this restcamp is its central location, meaning that we can drive around in the heart of Etosha.
Someways, I found this restcamp more peaceful than Okaukuejo that tends to be crowded and hectic with so many visitors roaming around.
The bathroom in our room does certainly need to be updated. Found it very cramped.
Good central base
We were pleasantly surprised with the standard of accommodation, the rooms were clean and more spacious than we'd expected.
The breakfast was fine, but after the first night we decided to self-cater our dinner, we'd already bought some supplies with us, and the shop provided the rest, some foreward planning is needed as the steaks etc are sold frozen, but with a bit of ingenuity and a swiss army knife we managed to eat quite well, after two weeks of cooked breakfasts & 3 to 5 course dinners it was nice to eat a little more frugally.
We did a morning drive and Martin our guide was a wealth of knowledge, giving us tips on where to go and when, we kept in touch with him through the rest of our stay and got information on what was about. All in all a good central base to discover Etosha.
Great location for animal watching
Our experience at Halali was much better than we had anticipated. Despite its size compared with other locations it was peaceful, the accommodation was simple and stylish and the big plus is the waterhole. Even the communal dining was less canteen-like than we feared (we were particulalrly fortunate to coincide with the Bank Holiday celebrations as the evening meal was an outdoor barbecue accompanied by singing and dancing. The standard of the food again exceeded our expectations.
The location of Halali, both in terms of its centrality within the park and its waterhole is what makes it so good (the large swimming pool was also a big hit with the family).
The sights and sounds of all of the wildlife at the waterhole at night (elephant, rhino, lion etc etc) will stay with us for ever and fulfilled our dream when we set out on this trip - this was why we came!
One practicality that we had misunderstood was that we had to pay the Park entrance fees whereas we had thought this charge to be included as we were staying in Halali.
review
Halali Campsite - Not a very clean site and only half a table. Lots of overlander trucks that were noisy. Good ablution blocks. Lovely swimming pool. Food not that great. Great location near waterhole.

Same arrangement at Okaukuejo in terms of food and key deposit. Staff were also similar. We prefered the accomodation here. We has a small kitchen area and seperate lounge as well as a patio.
The waterhole is smaller than at Okaukuejo and further from the camp. It was not visited by the same numbers of animals but we did see leopard and enjoyed a sunset watching a herd of 15 elephants coming to drink. The waterhole is in a more natural setting and the atmosphere is quieter. Very enjoyable, nut you have to be patient.

A very high standard of accommodation and service with obvious consideration being given to sensitively developing the camp.
However it would be beneficial if parking of vehicles on the route to the water-hole could be discouraged as it was at times intrusive and seems unnecessary.
Practical, very good chalet and central
Chalet far better than we expected. But you do need to bring your own tin openers, bottle openers, knives, forks, etc if you want to bbq. Worth noting that. We ate in restaurant which was very good buffet service. The chalets seemed very new and we were impressed. Nice showers and even soap, shampoo etc all provided and laundry service available on request. We got a lot of clothes washed here.
The reception desk needs more staff - slightly disorganised but all lovely staff. Noone checked our rooms before or after arrival. We had to ask for the an extra mattress for our youngest son. No problem - it came. A feeling that they were very busy. Not very clear about gate times of shutting or opening. But we liked the lay out of the camp, and it had a very nice feel to it, safe, clean and everyone walking about happily and rather like a piazza atmposphere at times.
Good shop although needed to stock up on foodstuff as nothing for picnics really or it had sold out by 9am.
Good to have some night drives on offer here.
Great big pool for swimming. Underused. Overall, good atmosphere of campers, and chalet dwellers all mucking in and obviously far more in the real world than at the lodges where we had been totally spoilt! Waterhole came up trumps second night when we saw rhino family. Might be good to erect a big sign asking people to stop talking when they start walking up to the waterhole on the path. Often noisy chitter chatter going on.
