Pumzika

Pumzika: Our full report

Rooms
11 tents, including 2 family tents
Open
All year

Opened in 2010, Pumzika is located in the Seronera region of the Serengeti National Park. A traditional-style tented camp set up in contemporary, relatively high-end style, it caters to a 90-per-cent Spanish clientele.

Pumzika is the sister camp to Pakulala on the Ngorongoro crater rim.

The square, carpeted lounge and mess tent is simply but comfortably furnished in a modern style. Tea and coffee are always available here, and this is where guests charge their camera and mobile batteries.

The eleven, good-sized, reasonably spaced guest tents here are set on a gently shelving plain, without much shade. Modern, comfy beds, with good linen, and iron-framed furniture, give a clean, voguish look to the tent interiors, complimented by simple bathrooms, with double, porcelain wash basins, flush loos and traditional safari showers, for which the staff bring hot water when required. The front of the tents have leather-covered directors’ chairs, but there’s nowhere truly relaxing to stretch out apart from the beds themselves.

Activities at Pumzika revolve around morning and afternoon game drives in the very productive and scenically memorable Seronera district and evenings see guests gathering around the open fire in front of the lounge tent to share tales of the day’s sights over a pre-dinner drink.

Our view

Although we haven’t stayed at Pumzika, our brief visit in April 2015 gave us the impression of a conscientiously managed camp. The staff were professional and welcoming and lunch was excellent, and we would expect it to deliver a rewarding and comfortable stay.
