Baboons & 3 Lion Prides at Chitabe Lediba

A perfect place to conclude our 1st trip to Botswana & Africa. Like the 4 other Wilderness Safaris camps where we stayed ---this was 1st rate. We would definitely return here.

We were greatly entertained by a large troop of mischievious baboons grazing in the expansive grasses bordering our deck--many babies riding atop or clinging to the belly of their mamas. Then we saw them all running back after being chased off by staff for trying to steal food in lounge area.

Incredible fortune to observe 3 lion prides. Jaw-dropping amazing to discover our jeep was in the middle of 8 resting lionesses & cub. Saw them again later waking up & setting off to hunt. Watched 2 lions loudly crunching away at their kill. All this was closeup and fascinating.

We didn't want to go home so soon, so each animal, bird & landscape we encountered seemed especially precious. Our last morning outing, gave us just one more time to see different animal species, almost like a parade all the way to the airstrip.

Chitabe Lediba

We loved the way the rooms have been re-decorated.

The staff was extremely friendly and the food was very good.

The guide was not the best we had on this trip.

Chitabe Lediba review

This camp has the feel of a larger organisation, being so close to the bigger Chitabe camp. The rooms are very large and have a modern, clean feel. Lovely comfy chairs to relax on both indoors and on the verandah. Large communal areas and a very relaxed feel to the camp.

The splash pool area is lovely and definitely the nicest pool of all the camps we stayed at. Our guide Mo was extremely knowledgable and skilled as well as entertaining. The game viewing was the best of our trip. The food was very good quality and well presented.

Great atmosphere at Chitabe Lediba

Very warm welcome from a great team of locals. Beautiful wood and thatch sitting/dining area. Food was first class and the BBQ evening lead by Malussi and all the staff, who danced and sang for us, was wonderful.

Lots of birds around the camp including a pair of grey hornbills nesting in a tree next to our tent who came to peck at our window and offer us insects. Lots of beautiful Cape glossy and Burchell's starlings.

Landscapes were beautiful; the cheetah were elusive but we did see a large pride of lions with their kill and the lions' hierarchy inter-action was fascinating. Although we didn't see a huge amount of animals during our drives, on our departure to the airstrip in the space of 45 minutes we saw: baboon, impala, tsessebe, a group of 6 giraffe, 2 warthogs, a leopard, 2 ostrichs, 3 mongoose and a steenbok all within a few metres of our jeep! Just shows you never know what to expect.

Chitabe Lediba review

Chitabe Lediba is exceptional in many aspects: landscape and vegetation, luxurious tents which were refurbished in 2011, impressive mix of wildlife and very supportive staff and management. The BBQ in the Boma with performing staff was very good.
Wildlife included many leopards, male and female lions (with cubs), a cheetah and many birds. Ebs was our exceptional guide: low key but very knowledgable. The food was very good. The menu was every day discussed with Moalosi, and adapted to diabetic requirements. Moalosi and his staff did an excellent job.

A great camp, could not be better.

The camp was well run, superb service and food like the others. The manager, Lucy was exceptional, a fascinating, intelligent individual and a wonderful conversationalist creating a warm atmosphere among the guests.

The guide, Ebs, was the best among the good guides leading to the siting of lion families with their cubs and other reat scenes. His long experience as a guide and his sensitivity to animal behavior, as well as our widhes, led to the possibility of watching complex animal interactions, instead of quick photography and rushing off to the next scene.

The artistic taste of the camp owner was evident in the beautiful art which devorated the camp.

Chitabe Lediba - luxury camp and many cats

After another short but very scenic flight we reached Chitabe - the final destination of our safari!

We stayed for 3 nights at Chitabe Lediba, the smaller and more private sister camp of Chitabe main camp, with only 5 very luxury accommodations. Also service, food and everything else was excellent. They offer game drives in the morning and afternoon (ending as a night drive!) and of course (like in all private concessions) with the opportunity to drive off road!

Our guide at Chitabe was Molemi (very experienced) who tracked different prides of lions and the two big males that rule the concession since 8 years!! He also spotted a beautiful leopard posing for us on ground and in a tree.
The famous wild dog pack has moved after the alpha female was killed by a lion and the remaining alpha male had to look for another female! There are cheetahs (also 3 brothers) in this area but although Molemi did a very good job we unfortunately haven't seen one. Beside the predators you can see many other animals like elephants, buffaloes, different species of antelopes (incl. Lechwe) ....
The landscape in Chitabe is amazing: you can see floodplains, open water, woodland but also open grassland!

Although all camps we've visited were great at least Chitabe was our favorite one because of it's very private atmosphere.
So we can highly recommend it!

Chitabe Lediba review

We had a truly wonderful stay at Chitabe Lediba. On landing at the airstrip, our driver told us that a leopard had been seen in the area that morning and asked if we wanted a quick detour to see if the young male was still there. As a result, literally minutes after landing, we were photographing a leopard posing obligingly in a sausage tree! It was a great welcome to Chitabe, and very much set the tone for some really fantastic wildlife sightings over the following 3 days. We saw a group of three cheetah (mother and 2 cubs) on 3 separate occasions - on one of these, we watched them stalk and then chase impala. One evening, we watched a pride of lions hunting - they made two attempts in short succession, the females working together to confuse the impala, but they were unsuccessful. The following morning, we hadn't even left the camp when we came across the same group of lions and they had just killed a kudu - they were so close to the camp that we found them later that afternoon lying in the shade of the tents at Chitabe main camp. Lots of interesting bird species too - raptors, vultures and some beautiful wattled cranes. We had read on the Expert Africa site that Chitabe was a good place to see wild dog, but apparently the pack has declined since the death of the alpha female and, at the time of our visit, the guides said they had not had any sightings for a number of weeks.

Luke, our guide, was very good though we thought our guide at Little Vumbura was so passionate about the wildlife that he would often go the extra mile. Although not a major focus of the camp, we asked if we could do a walking safari one morning, and highly recommend it as a way of learning about the smaller species and the plant life. We didn't even have to miss out on the game drive, as we went out in the 4WD in the morning, then started our walk around 10am.

We're glad we decided to stay at Chitabe Lediba rather than the main camp. Perhaps because there are fewer tents and therefore fewer guests, we had the guide and vehicle to ourselves for several of the drives and a maximum of 4 at any one time, whilst nearly all the vehicles we saw from the main camp were shared by 6 people.

The tents are very spacious and quite luxurious. We particularly loved the outdoor shower. We found the staff to be very welcoming and efficient. The food was excellent, and the barbecue at the boma on our first evening was great.
